A truly equal world would be one where women ran half our countries and companies and men ran half our homes. I believe that this would be a better world.
Lean In is committed to offering women the ongoing inspiration and support to help them achieve their goals. Lean In supports women through Community, Education, and Circles.
The bookĀ Lean InĀ is focused on encouraging women to pursue their ambitions, and changing the conversation from what we canāt do to what we can do. LeanIn.Org is the next chapter.
We are committed to offering women the ongoing inspiration and support to help them achieve their goals. If we talk openly about the challenges women face and work together, we can change the trajectory of women and create a better world for everyone.
Lean In supports women in 3 important ways:
Community
We want all women to have the confidence and know-how to achieve their goals. This starts with an active and supportive community. Each day weāll encourage an open exchange of ideas and information. We will also share Lean In Storiesāshort narratives of moments in life when we choose to ālean inā or ālean backā intended to inspire, teach and connect us.
Education
We offer a growing library of free online lectures on topics including leadership and communication. Produced in partnership with the Clayman Institute for Gender Studies at Stanford University and other well-known experts, these lectures offer women practical skills they can apply in their daily lives.
Circles
Lean In Circles are small groups that meet monthly to encourage and support each other in an atmosphere of confidentiality and trust. We provide the materials and support to run a successful Circle, including online spaces that make it easy for members to stay up-to-date and connected. Circles are powered by Mightybell, the first network of private groups.

Time for women to lean in for parity in public office
By LINDA MITCHELL AND MELISSA THOMPSON ALEXANDER ā appeared in the Tacoma News Tribune on October 29, 2013
Washington has long been a leader in womenās equity. Women were given the right to vote here in 1910 ā 10 years before the 19th Amendmentās ratification. In 1926, Seattle Mayor Bertha Knight Landes became the first woman to lead a major American city. Dixy Lee Ray became one of the nationās first female governors.
More recently, in 2004, Washington became the first state to elect all women ā Gov. Christine Gregoire and Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell ā to the stateās top three offices.
None of this happened by accident.
For 40 years, the National Womenās Political Caucus (NWPC) of Washington has worked to get more women involved in the political process by recruiting, training and electing women to office. After four decades of advocacy, thereās still work to do.
In the early 1990s Washington let the nation with more than 40 percent of seats in our state Legislature held by women. Today, that number is 30 percent.
One of the biggest challenges to gender parity in office is that women donāt run. According to a national study by the Center for American Women in Politics, women are much more likely to run if theyāre recruited by others. Men donāt wait to be asked.
The NWPC of Washington recently conducted a survey of women to identify the barriers to entry for public office. Women need to know they have a strong community of support behind them. In our survey, women said having a strong network of allies ready to help was the most important part of their decision to run.
And this is where we can make a difference ā women helping other women. We need to be able to unite behind women candidates and create a level playing field for elections. According to research from the Barbara Lee Foundation, voters ā including women voters ā have a higher standard for what theyāll consider a āqualifiedā woman candidate.
We need to be aware of how we as women can inadvertently undercut one another by buying into arguments that men are more qualified, better fundraisers or better negotiators. We can help one another play up our strengths.
As women, we need to commit to supporting women candidates with our financial donations, with our growing influence and networks and, most importantly, with our vote.
This November, the NWPC has endorsed more than 60 women candidates in local elections. Women in Washington are leaning in and running for office. Now itās our turn to lean in and elect them.
Linda Mitchell is the current president of the National Womenās Political Caucus (NWPC) of Washington. Melissa Thompson Alexander is a past president and co-founder of the organization.
By bell hooks Editorsā Note: Though some of the fanfare surrounding Sheryl Sandberg (of Facebook and Lean In fame) has died down, Sandberg is back with her neoliberal feminism, or what bell hooks describes below as āfaux feminism.ā After weeks of traveling the nation hawking books (and thousands upon thousands sold), amid endless celebration, debate, and criticism, Sandberg and her corporate feminism seek to cover even more territory. Sadly, we now know where: just this week, Sandberg announced her plans to take her Lean In fairytale to college campuses nationwide. At Howard University, she announced her plans for this new initiative, which its website described as follows: āLeanIn.Org will work with students on campuses around the world to change the trajectory for women. Our belief is firm: Your generation holds the hope for a more equal future. Join us.ā Below, bell hooks reminds readers why we should be skeptical of this sort of faux [ā¦]
