The International Labour Organization and a group of academic partners that includes The Lillian Goldman Law Library at Yale Law School have launched a program to provide free or inexpensive access to legal information and training to promote research in low and middle income countries and help strengthen the rule of law.
The program, known as GOALI (Global Online Access to Legal Information) will give users in more than 115 developing countries access to a wide range of essential legal information for their work and studies that they would not normally be able to obtain.

Hennepin County Law Library
Did you know that Hennepin County has a law library that is open to the public?
The law library serves a wide variety of people. Although it’s true that a majority of its users are lawyers, the law library is open to the public and ALL are welcome. The librarians answer many questions related to the general, everyday issues of life--disagreements between neighbors, landlord-tenant problems, home foreclosures, and creating wills, among other topics. Although the librarians aren’t attorneys and therefore can’t give legal advice, they can point you in the right direction and help you learn more about the law.
The Hennepin County Law Library reopened in its new space on Monday, Aug. 1. Stop by and check it out!
A History of Rebuilding
The Hennepin County Law Library started as a membership library of the Minneapolis Bar Association on February 20, 1883. Members bought stock in the corporation and some purchased stock by donating law books, which were valued by an appraisal committee. These books formed the beginning of the law library.
The library’s first location was a room on the 2nd floor of a building in Bridge Square at Nicollet and Washington. In August, 1883, the collection was moved to the Academy of Music Building, where the materials were destroyed in a fire on Christmas Day, 1884. With $15,000 of insurance, a new library was opened in the Boston Block. But a year later, in May 1886, that library was also burned. With $20,000 of insurance, the library moved to the Temple Court building. Then, in 1903, judges of the District Court ordered the County Commissioners and City Council to provide suitable accommodations for library rooms in the new Court House and City Hall, known as the Municipal Building. In 1934 the stock in the Association and all 35,000 volumes in the library collection were presented to Hennepin County. The Hennepin County Law Library was officially born.
Over the years the library grew substantially, and when the Hennepin County Government Center opened in 1976, the Hennepin County Law Library moved into a magnificent space occupying the entire 24th floor of the Courts Tower. In 2009 the Hennepin County Commissioners passed a board action naming the library the Anne W. Grande Law Library after former director Anne W. Grande, pictured above, who worked at the library from 1975 to 2008.
