“Cornbread” by #LeeMorgan was recorded on this day September 18, 1965, at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Morgan on trumpet, #JackieMcLean on alto, #HankMobley on tenor, #HerbieHancock on piano, #LarryRidley on bass and #BillyHiggins on drums. It was shelved for two years, but despite the success of “The Sidewinder” in 1964 and “Search for the New Land” in 1966 arguably his two greatest albums, this album didn’t sound stale when it was released in 1967. All tunes were written by Morgan except for the romantic ballad “Ill Wind” as Lee plays his trumpet with a mute. My favorite tune of this session is “Ceora” which feels like a smooth bossa nova type tune with Herbie’s piano gliding over Higgins’ steady beat. This is an original I jumped at to replace my blue labeled UA copy that served me well for many years. I also have a @BlueNoteRecords Tone Poet Series reissue in my collection as well. Not sure if or when #BlueNoteRecords will reprint their sold-out Tone Poet’s, but if they do, I highly recommend this.
