This LP is one of those rare ones that grounds me as soon as I hear it. Also, half a lifetime of listening to Madlib means a lot of strange moments hearing the originals of samples that feel woven into your very DNA pop up in jazz records. Case in point: a few months ago I listened to Art Blakey’s Witch Doctor for the first time, and right out of the gate got slapped in the face with a horn riff Madlib used in the intro to this album. The man has such taste.
