one of the many things that makes english language hegemony ass is how it will have someone like my cousin (grew up in a bilingual household; has one parent for whom Spanish is their first language) saying things like I can't accept this promotion because I'm not really fluent
it steals language from so many people, and even when it doesn't steal language completely, it makes people feel clumsy & inadequate in a language that is theirs (not to mention the ways white english speakers are almost always celebrated more for their ability to speak another language vs. those who are "expected" to know that language)
