Bonus 66: Using a rabbit to get kids chatting for science
If you're looking to try to figure out how kids talk, you might start by asking them some questions, or showing them a picture and trying to get them to talk about it. The problem is, sometimes kids are shy or not accustomed to answering direct questions from strangers, so these methods can underestimate them. A linguist named Bill Labov had a different idea: what if he brought a live rabbit into a school, told the kids that the rabbit was nervous but would calm down if they talked to it, turned the recorder on, and then left the room? Maybe kids who weren't comfortable talking to a teacher or researcher would feel more relaxed and chatty with a furry friend. (Spoiler: it worked!)
In this bonus episode, Lauren and Gretchen get enthusiastic about a forgotten gem of a linguistics paper about a rabbit! We talk about how Linguistics Twitter got excited about tracking down this paper based on a vague rumour, Labov's history of coming up with unique ways to record language in more natural environments (Anyone want to write a linguistics mystery novel called From Death to Department Stores?), and useful takeaways about how to talk with children (Tired: questions you already know the answer to. Inspired: respecting kids as peers). Plus: the name of the rabbit (Vincent) and the broader educational context that this paper was written in.

Members were invited to join us for the presentation of the Talcott Parsons Prize to pioneering linguist William Labov for his distinguished and original contributions to the social sciences. Dr. Labov is regarded as the founder of variationist sociolinguistics, a discipline dedicated to understanding and researching language in relation to social factors that include region, class, and gender. He has also worked to promote literacy for speakers of non-standard dialects and to develop reading and teaching materials for these populations. The virtual program included remarks by Academy President David Oxtoby, University of Pennsylvania Provost Wendell Pritchett, and linguist Penelope Eckert, and a talk by Dr. Labov. , First awarded in 1974, the Talcott Parsons Prize was established to honor the noted sociologist and former president of the Academy. Previous recipients of the prize include Joan Wallach Scott (history), Daniel Kahneman (psychology), William Julius Wilson (sociology), and Albert O. Hirschman (economics). A complete list of all past winners is available here. Read the press release for more information about the honoree and the prize.

Northern Cities Vowel Shift
Teoria da Variação e Mudança Linguística
Proposto por Labov, questiona e propõe um novo olhar sobre a estrutura das línguas, de forma especial sobre os fenômenos da variação e da mudança linguísticas;
O ponto central na abordagem proposta por Labov é a presença do componente social na análise linguística;
A Sociolinguística ocupa-se da relação entre língua e sociedade, estrutura e evolução da linguagem dentro do contexto social da comunidade de fala.
Principais conceitos
O fato de a variação ser inerente às línguas está ligado diretamente à noção de heterogeneidade – as línguas são sistemas heterogêneos;
Como, ainda se está falando em sistema, a variação pode ser sistematizada. Não se trata, portanto, de um caos linguístico - a língua é dotada de heterogeneidade estruturada, portanto há regras, sim.
