The moonlight casts silver ribbons over the endless horizon, painting Kun’s face in a glow too ethereal for someone burdened by eternity. He stands at the edge of a cliff, where the wind howls like the ghosts of years past—years he has lived, years I have spent by his side.
I take a step closer, the crunch of gravel beneath my boots too loud in the silence. He doesn’t turn. He knows I’m here. He always does.
“How long has it been?” His voice is steady, quiet. It carries the weight of centuries.
“Three hundred years, give or take.” My fingers twitch at my side, aching to reach for him. “Do you ever lose count?”
“Sometimes.” He exhales, and it’s not just air he releases—it’s time, longing, regret. “But I never forget you.”
His words burrow deep, sinking into the cracks of my being where love festers like a wound. I have fought wars for him, faced the wrath of kings, watched empires rise and fall—always at his side, always his protector.
Always the one who failed.
No matter what I do, the curse remains unbroken. A thousand spells, a hundred prophecies, a lifetime of searching for answers, and still, he lingers, unaging, untouchable by death. And I—just as cursed in my own way—remain bound to him, watching the centuries etch sorrow into his eyes.
And yet, my greatest sin is this: I no longer search for a way to free him.
Because with every passing year, my love for him grows. And if his curse is eternal life, then mine is the unbearable truth—I do not want to lose him.
“Kun…” My voice wavers. I want to tell him. I want to confess the weight of this love, the selfishness of my heart.
But before I can, he finally turns to face me, and whatever I was about to say dies on my tongue. His gaze is soft, unreadable, yet there’s something there—something unspoken, something waiting.
“I don’t think my curse is the only one at play here,” he murmurs, stepping forward, his presence wrapping around me like a whisper of warmth. “Maybe… we’re both trapped.”
His hand brushes against mine. Just barely. Just enough for me to wonder if maybe, just maybe, he already knows the truth.
The night air feels heavier now, charged with something unspeakable, something neither of us dares to name. Kun’s fingers barely graze mine, but even that fleeting contact sends shivers up my spine.
He has always been careful. Always distant.
But tonight, something is different.
“You think we’re both cursed?” My voice is barely above a whisper. “You, bound to eternity. Me, bound to you.”
Kun tilts his head slightly, studying me as though searching for an answer in my face. Or perhaps, searching for a truth he already knows.
“I’ve thought about it for centuries,” he says at last. “Why you? Why must you be the one to protect me? Why does time refuse to take you, when every other mortal has long since turned to dust?”
The question lingers between us like a breath of cold wind. It is not the first time he has asked it, but it is the first time I hear it laced with something else—something dangerously close to hope.
I swallow hard. “You think my fate is tied to yours.”
Kun nods. “Or maybe you are my fate.”
My heart stumbles over itself, the weight of those words pressing down on me, threatening to pull me under. For three hundred years, I have watched him endure an existence that no one should have to bear. I have fought alongside him, bled for him, suffered for him. And in return, I have fallen into something deeper than devotion.
I have fallen in love with him.
And love, I fear, is just another curse neither of us can escape.
I take a step closer, my breath catching as Kun doesn’t move away. The space between us is thin—so thin that if I reached out, I could touch him. But I don’t. Not yet.
“Kun,” I whisper. “What if the curse has already been broken?”
His brows furrow slightly, confusion flickering in his gaze. “What do you mean?”
“What if it was never about breaking it?” I murmur, pulse hammering in my ears. “What if it was about understanding it?”
His lips part slightly, but he says nothing.
“You have lived for centuries, and I have stayed by your side,” I continue, each word trembling on my tongue. “I’ve searched for answers, for spells, for miracles. But what if the only reason I have never found a way to free you is because… I didn’t truly want to?”
Silence. Heavy. Suffocating.
And then—Kun lifts a hand, hesitates, then cups my cheek with the gentlest touch.
“You’re saying…” His thumb brushes lightly over my skin, his eyes searching mine. “That you love me too much to let me go?”
The truth tastes like fire on my tongue.
“Yes.”
Kun’s breath hitches, and for the first time in three hundred years, I see something in him I have never seen before.
Longing.
He exhales softly, his forehead pressing against mine. “Then maybe that is my real curse,” he whispers. “Not eternity. Not immortality. But loving you in a world where time does not belong to me.”
The stars above us burn bright, but nothing in this world, nothing in all of existence, burns as fiercely as the way he looks at me now.
Maybe the curse was never meant to be broken.
Maybe it was meant to be endured—together.
