At least w/ me, I def ID differently depending on who I’m around. I tend to feel more nb around bi/pan dudes and andro/butch girls and other nbs, but around straight guys or femmes of any gender I usually feel way more girly. Depends on th person too

Though it is a form of colourism, it’s not white washing! Saying that contributes to the idea that Japanese characters shouldn’t be read as Japanese. Still disappointed on the skin lightening tho :/ its a shame.
Ahhh, you're right about that. Even with lighter skin the both of them should still be read as Japanese characters, so that was my mistake. My bad. Thank you for the correction. 0:

I just read the customer pov post and would like to add a little something about my experience as an artist to their approachable attitude part of the POV! It was my first time as an AA artist at animenext this weekend, but something I noticed pretty immediately was how much cosplaying/dressed up customers reacted to us fangirling behind the table! We called out to A TON of people who were cosplaying to ask for quick pictures (there was enough space in front of the table for them to stand without blocking the passageways, don’t block passageways!!!) and around three quarters of them stayed to get a closer look at our table that they might have otherwise missed. Around half of those bought something and some of them even commissioned one of us! Mostly though they were really really fun to talk to. Sometimes they even stopped by over the rest of the convention to show us that days cosplay or outfit or to bring friends over to show them our stuff! Honestly talking to customers was not only good for sales, but definitely one of my favorite parts of the entire experience. It all made me really want to do an artist alley every weekend. Also I think some other artists might do this, but we gave free stickers or buttons to people dressed up from their fandoms which sometimes got them to buy other things, or at least got them to remember us/pick up our cards. So I agree! Approachability/Customer Interaction really makes a difference from what I could tell…from my first con at least, haha.

It is nice to remember that many of us get into doing Artist Alleys at cons because we’re fans: wanting to share what we care about with other people, and/or wanting to participate/be even more involved with an event that we enjoy. That level of personal engagement you can get with others who love what you love is one of the reasons artists continue to do physical events.
It’s also a good point that many others have brought up - cons are busy places, and there are many things that compete for our limited attention spans. It’s easy to miss things when you’re going through an artist alley. When you interact with people in positive ways (e.g., complimenting someone’s cosplay, etc.), it is a nice way to catch their attention. People are there for an experience and positive feedback can make anyone’s day. It also invites them to interact further with you too!
