My Muse, My Muse (Sugawara Koshi x Artist! Reader)
a/n: this is purely self indulgent lmao because I draw and I love art <3 This is a schoolmates to lovers(?) kinda thing :))
This is just a relatively short, fluffy, cute drabble btw dont expect too much (but i realise that these kind of short fics get the most likes and interactions so-)
“Ooh, what ‘ya drawing?” Nishinoya asked, snatching your travel sketchbook and looking at the newest drawing.
“Give that back!” You yelped, ripping off your headphones and immediately grabbing your sketchbook (quite easily due to his short stature) out of his curious hands and shutting it tight. “I’m never drawing at school again…” You mumbled as Nishinoya pouted at you.
It was a warm Tuesday afternoon, the golden sun streaming through the blinds and the sound of the persistent fan seemed to freeze you in a perfect moment until someone, cough, your best friend, ruined it. You swatted him away as you sat back down, calming your heart after that jumpscare had left your heart in shock. This was your idea of a perfect lunch at school- sketching quietly in an empty classroom, the temperature and atmosphere just perfect, with an interesting new subject or reference photo that you were itching to present on a page.
Of course, you loved chatting with your two chaotic friends during lunch in the cafeteria as well, but a lot of days at school just left you craving peace and solidarity, especially if you already had a lot of classes with them in the morning.
Now that your focus was interrupted, you groaned and shoved your pencils and erasers back into your pouch, carefully placing your sketchbook in your bag between your laptop and English notebook as you always did.
Grabbing the straps of your backpack, you reluctantly followed Nishinoya, who was bouncing by the doorway to eat outside in the grass as it, admittedly, was a beautiful day.
Wow, why have I never drawn that tree before? You asked yourself, admiring a stout but large tree with arching and twisting branches, not paying attention to where you stepped. And God, it was such a stupid move because when you took one more unsuspecting step with your neck twisted to observe a particularly complicated angle of the tree, you completely faceplanted into someone’s back.
You immediately took a step back shakily, apologising embarrassedly. “Oh God, I’m so sorry. Are you okay?”
When the person turned around to face you, you may have forgotten how to breathe for a second.
He was handsome. Breathtaking. Beautiful. The symmetry of his face, the cute moles, silver hair, and sweet smile had you staring like an idiot.
Oh, I would love to draw him. The hair, no, the eyes, his mole. Oh my God, he deserves to be captured with all my expensive pencils. Or paints. What medium would suit-
“Oh, no worries,” He laughed, instinctively reaching out to help you stabilize your footing.
“N-no, I’m really sorry. That was so stupid of me.” You exclaimed, feeling the heat rising in your face, so desperately wanting to study each atom of his face until you could sketch him without a reference photo.
His clear, soft laugh filled your ears, like a warm hand playing with your hair that comforted you and warmed you to your toes.
His hand lingered for a moment before he pulled away, and you joined the circle of volleyball players sitting on the grass. You already knew a few of them, and Noya and Tanaka introduced you to the rest of them, everybody greeting you cheerfully.
Kiyoko, you knew because you two best friends kept thirsting after her, Daichi, you had seen before, Asahi was new, Kageyama and Hinata you knew, Tsukishima and Yamaguchi were new, Yachi you had talked to a bit before, and finally, Sugawara Koshi.
“Hi, my name’s Suga. I’m a year above you,” He said with a bright grin that for some reason made you feel even more embarrassed about knocking into him earlier.
“H-hey,” You whispered, and you cursed yourself for sounding so meek.
That was the first day that you started hanging out with the volleyball team; Noya and Tanaka were delighted that you started sitting with them more at lunch instead of cooping yourself up in a classroom alone during break. You, in turn, loved spending time with their friends, laughing at inside jokes and being made fun of (jokingly) for your lack of physical ability. It was like you had found your people, and you loved your friends, but one person kept tugging at your mind: Sugawara.
Every evening after the first time meeting him, you had attempted to draw him from memory, straining to remember every single detail of his face, redrawing the same eye at least 15 times but to no avail. Everyday at school, you would try your best to memorise his features in the short lunch periods without seeming like a creepy perv.
You were frustrated to no end, and you even resorted to stalking everyone’s socials from the team, but you couldn’t find a single photo of Suga, and the one team photo you found was blurry as fuck, and his face was tiny, not helping you at all. Your trashcan was filled to the brim with crumpled paper of your failed drawings, and it wasn’t like you could just click a photo of him and seem normal at the same time.
You felt like an obsessed stalker, constantly trying to figure out how to draw a proper portrait of him. It was eating you alive.
Until one day, when you were sprawled out on the grass as usual during lunch with the others, Noya grabbed your bag, rummaging for a snack when your sketchbook tumbled out, revealing pages upon pages of your different sketches and drawings of multiple media- pencil, watercolor, pastels, and more.
The team stared at the book as its pages fluttered in the wind. You felt your cheeks warm as you snatched the book and stuffed it back into your bag.
“You draw?” Daichi asked, and you bit your lip before nodding.
“Yeah, it’s just like a little hobby,” You waved off.
“What? Your drawings are so good!” Yamaguchi gushed, smiling from ear to ear, and Suga nodded.
You choked on your laugh. “T-thanks guys.”
“Draw me!” Suga exclaimed excitedly. “Please?”
Your world seemed to stop, and your breath hitched. The birds stopped cawing, the grass stopped dancing with the wind, and your eyes blew wide.
“A-are you serious?” You asked, and Suga’s eyes widened as well.
“No, no, you don’t have to. I just thought your drawings were cute. Sorry, that was demanding of me,” He responded.
“NO!” You yelped and cringed at how loud you were. “No, I mean, I would love to draw you. Genuinely. Can I… take a photo of you to draw then?”
Thudthudthudthud, your heart went as you felt the sweet taste of what you wanted nearing you finally.
Suga nodded, his blush now matching yours as you shakily clicked a photo of him. And another. Tanaka and Nishinoya glanced at each other with knowing smirks but didn’t say anything when you glared at them.
When lunch ended and you were strolling back to the classroom in a daze with Noya and Tanaka, they looked at you, wearing equally evil grins. “Yuu, Ryu. Not. A. Word.” You said, still feeling your heart pound. They giggled and skipped around you like they were the ones with a romantic interest (haha they don’t) anyway.
That night, you finally got to draw with a reference photo, and God, it was a game changer. Finally, you were able to capture his soft silver locks, his joyful eyes, and his handsome expression. You unknowingly spent a good 5 hours on it after rushing all your homework and dinner, wanting to capture every detail perfectly.
The next morning, you arrived at school early, gripping a paper bag that held your masterpiece as you tentatively yet excitedly approached the volleyball gym where the boys were having morning practice. Pushing open the door, you greeted everyone first, waving at Hinata, smiling at Kiyoko, and bowing at Coach Ukai.
When you found Suga taking a water break on the side, you walked up to him, feeling your heart rate increase.
“Hello,” You greeted. “I-uh, finished your drawing.” You thrust out the paper bag to him as he turned to you, smiling delightedly.
“Already? Wow, thank you!” He said, opening the bag and lifting the page out carefully. He gasped as he admired the drawing.
“I-wow. What? Wow,” He gasped breathlessly. “This is… amazing. Thank you, thank you! You captured me to look so… hmm, what’s the word?”
“Lovely?” You blurted. “N-not to say I made you lovely. Like, you’re lovely in general. No, wait, I mean- Well, you are lovely, what I’m trying to say-” You rambled like an absolute idiot.
Suga stared at you before bursting out laughing. “Oh my goodness, yes, that’s the word. Thank you so much. Actually. And thanks for the compliment by the way. I think you’re pretty lovely too.” He winked, and you felt your soul leave your body. “If you want, maybe I can take you out on a date to repay you?”
“I, yes, yes please. I would love that,” You replied, giddy with shock.
“Wel, thanks for the masterpiece Y/N-san~ See you after class,” He said, jogging back to finish his drills, leaving you with a fluttering heart.
