Past Tense
A similar rule (how to change verbs into present tense), is applied to making past tense sentences.
1. Verb stems ending with vowels ㅗ or ㅏare followed by 았어요.
2. Verb stems ending with vowels other than ㅗ or ㅏ are followed by 었어요.
3. Verb stem 하 is followed by 였어요.
∙ Examples ∙
1. 사다 = to buy
Verb stem = 사
Past tense
사 + 았어요 = 샀어요 = I / you / she (etc.) bought
2. 오다 = to come
Verb stem = 오
Past tense
오 + 았어요 = 왔어요 = I / you / he (etc.) came
3. 적다 = to write down
Verb stem = 적
Past tense
적 + 었어요 = 적었어요 = I / you / they (etc.) wrote
4. 하다 = to do
Verb stem = 하
Past tense
하 + 였어요 = 했어요 = I / you / she (etc.) did
