I’m not feeling the new Fruits Basket anime AT ALL. What is this, it feels like the genre is turned into full-on harem. The dimension in characters is nonexistent. The character design strays too far. It doesn’t feel like the original.
I miss the fast phase, good soundtrack, and PERSONALITY.
Of course it’s great that furuba gets the whole story animated, and maybe I could get more into it when it gets more into the “serious” plot part, but I don’t know. The humor that is on point in manga and the old anime is missing completely. Why is that? That is the one of the best part in the series. The story doesn’t feel ridiculous because it has its funny parts in it. The new anime feels too lighthearted, even though there’s barely humor in it.
The “subtle” hints of the future plot is too blatant. Like the cap for example. It keeps popping up and there’s only two episodes out. And I know, I might bee too familiar with the plot and a new viewer is getting a new experience. Also, the nostalgic value of furuba is engraved deep in me. But still. But STILL.
Like, I just went back for the first episode of the first anime and the second the opening hits! It’s so sad, and so sweet, and so perfect. I know, the nostalgia, but it’s not just that. There is somehow more feeling in the voice acting. I loved Yuki’s voice, not that I mind that the voice actor is male in the new anime, it might be a correct choice as they grow up. But again, there’s more personality in the old actor’s acting, was she woman or a man. One thing that is good for the new telling of the story is that Akito’s voice was changed the way it was.
Maybe the previous animation and character design weren’t great, but the mood is perfect. The story feels more mature, and maybe that’s it. Maybe The new version is made for more younger target audience. I’m not saying that no one should enjoy the new anime or that they’re wrong if they give compliments. I’m just underwhelmed.
I was supposed to get just the screenshot from the old anime but I’m watching it now.
