A Bride's Story has gradually worked its way into becoming one of my favourite manga. It's so adoringly detailed – such a true labour of animal- and history-nerd love – that its naive romanticism becomes its most endearing strength.
Set in 19th-century Central Asia (modern-day Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, etc), it starts out as the story of a bright-eyed 20-year-old Steppe woman named Amir coming to undertake an arranged marriage with a 12-year-old boy named Karluk. That age gap is wildly problematic from a modern perspective, but it never feels like Kaoru Mori is doing anything remotely creepy with it. Their relationship is very chaste, and if anything, having Karluk be so young feels like an excuse for Mori to avoid having to depict male sexuality in any real way. (As becomes EYE-POPPINGLY clear by the extraordinarily sapphic volume 7, Mori is a mangaka who is far more interested in women's bodies than men's. I can't find any info online as to whether she's actually a lesbian, but she certainly draws like one!!!)
The story soon flowers out from Amir and Karluk, and we meet a whole garden of characters from all over Central Asia. It's a real forever-stew of a manga: sometimes ethnography, sometimes adventure, sometimes romance, sometimes quiet domestic drama, sometimes textiles manual, and sometimes buckwild action movie – but always animated by the same base: Mori's obsessive delight with the history of the region. After 15 volumes, I'm so won over, and I'm going to greet the publication of the next one like the return of an old friend. 😭🙏
