kisa and hiro this one only gets higher than rin and hatsuharu because hiro is the world's funniest kid and watching him get flustered next to kisa is hysterical. but otherwise them being romantically interested in each other was kind of unnecessary.
hatori and mayu i love the incredibly stupid drama going on between the 20-somethings and really want to like these two as a couple but once again they are kind of giving us nothing. why do they even like each other it's not clear. please give me a crumb of a reason i'm begging you.
shigure and akito you might question these two being so high on the list but they are probably the most entertaining duo and i am 100% invested at all times. is it healthy? no. should they involve anyone else in what's going on here? no. do i want to see the new ways they come up with to torment each other? absolutely.
ritchan and mitchan truly the useless lesbian representation that society needs
kyo and tohru obviously they are the colossus of romance in this story, i don't personally ship it romantically but they are so cute together, they have banter and chemistry and a rock solid friendship to build off. it's good
yuki and machi listen this may come as a surprise but i love them and everyone should look at these two and take notes about how romance sideplots work. yuki's main arc is about getting over his trauma and learning to express himself and be more confident. and his relationship with machi slots in perfectly to that because he sees her, he knows what she's going through and uses his newfound confidence to reach out to her. and machi has this guy opening up her entire world because he gets it. their interactions are funny, they tease each other but also support each other. i think about him breaking the chalk for her all the time.

Somebody: “Kyo is such a red flag, his behavior in season 1 is sooooo abusive, Tohru deserves better”
Also Kyo: recognizes when his anger is harmful and works towards managing it, actively tries to make up for his mistakes outside of just saying “I’m sorry”, is really good at reading Tohru and gradually learned ways of cheering her up, DID apologize for hitting her in his True Form in the manga (both animes cut it out for some reason but whatever), and protected her in so many little ways.
No, Kyo is not perfect, but Fruits Basket emphasizes why he and Tohru fell in love with each other. That their relationship is balanced and good natured even if it’s not perfect. Those that only acknowledged surface level impressions misunderstood the characters, I fear.
