The next step in Ontario’s plan to expand the number of private clinics offering publicly funded health care will roll out early next year, with four centres offering hip and knee replacements. Health Minister Sylvia Jones announced Monday that Ontario is spending $125 million over two years to add up to 20,000 orthopedic surgeries. Jones says the expansion should ensure that 90 per cent of patients get those procedures within clinically recommended timeframes, up from the current level of 80 per cent.

Hello! We’re nearly at the year mark for my last shoulder replacement! I’m doing very well now!

I’ve gained back a lot of range of motion. I have no bone-related shoulder pain anymore. It’s all muscle stuff now, that the doctor suggested I get massage done for.

My knee replacements are still going strong. Nothing wrong there. No knee pain, full range there, and I can get on and off the ground.

Feet are still pretty arthritic, but that’s osteoarthritis and to be expected. Special shoes and/or inserts help a lot.

One of the primary elements driving market demand is increased infection rates, which are contributing to an increase in knee revisions. Type 1 (early post-operative), type 2 (late chronic), type 3 (acute hematogenous), and type 4 (late chronic) total Knee Replacements are the four primary varieties (positive intraoperative cultures but clinically unapparent infection). 

Over time, the number of infections linked with total knee replacement has steadily increased. Serious problems, including as infections, occur in over 2% of patients, according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Infections most commonly arise in the wound site or around the prosthesis and occur during or after a patient's hospital stay.

One thing I find myself talking a lot about are my knees. You see, my knees are not as old as I am. Just this past May, we celebrated our 10 year anniversary together, as I parted ways with my old knees at the tender age of 26.

I was young. I knew that, my doctor knew that and my surgeon knew that. But there I was, at 26, facing full, simultaneous, bi-lateral knee replacements.
