klaus and iliana spend a lot of their time together manipulating each other but unfortunately, though neither of them will admit it for the fact that they Openly love other siblings more, i do think they fell in love with each other at some point. something something seeing the worst versions of each other through the years and still working in tandem is actually Great for two people who think the whole world will come to ruin their lives.
in almost every version of iliana's story, she is the one who primarily takes care of klaus when he's suffering through the hunter's curse. it's her magic that temporarily binds him or balms his mind. it is her who will go to toe to toe with him when he tries to kill himself and it is her who says if he tries to find mikael and die, she is going to die alongside him. she says it so casually that it shocks him each time, and i do think it's a memory that sticks out to him even centuries later.
in versions where henrik is alive during the hunter's curse era, he and iliana both shoulder this burden of keeping him alive. elijah is vehemently against them taking on the responsibility but he does not get a vote in this, according to iliana. it's now his responsibility to protect rebekah during this time in the case of klaus somehow getting past her and henrik.
and years later, when iliana's girls disappear (put into a prison world), klaus helps her search tirelessly for what happened to them. they come up empty and klaus keeps her secret of even loving them. they're a very quiet dynamic, because a lot of the overlap is manipulation and they are outwardly blustering about rebekah and henrik and elijah and such.
