Kabi Sanjay’s Mahabharata is a lesser-known adaptation of Vyasa’s epic, composed in the 1400s in Bengal. There is some discourse around whether this might be the first Bengali adaptation or not (it is considered as such in popular tradition), but it certainly precedes the Kashidashi version. The author’s real name is probably not Sanjay, but there is little indication as to what his real name might have been.

He is believed to have been born in Laur, a town in the Sylhet province of modern-day Bangladesh. This is assumed as such since he often notes the kings of Pragjyotisha, specifically Bhagadatta, as Laur-eshvar.

His bhanita, or self-identification, at the end of each distinct event in this book varies from chapter to chapter. An example of the same:

“The story of MB was plunged in darkness,

Kabi Sanjay has now lit a lamp for it.”

His primary aim, as declared by himself, was to bring the Sanskrit epic, long gatekept by the scholars of the society, closer to the common people. His version borrows selectively from the Vaishampayana version (most commonly followed) and the near-lost Jaimini version. He often calls his retelling either ‘Bharat Katha’ or ‘Pandava Vijaya.’

The narrative here is devoid of the usual frills such as the creation myths or long-drawn genealogies as is seen in the Sanskrit Vaishampayana Mahabharata or in its companion puranas.

This entire parva is near-identical to the Jaimineya Ashvamedha Parva, and the clownery continues.

Ashvamedhika Parva

Yudhishthira's abhishek happened, random women danced, Satyaki and Krishna shared a seat, and Kunti presided over the court with the twins. Vidur retired, leaving Sanjay as the next prime minister. Nakul and Sahadev then got roped into being guards for the sabha.

Bheem got Dushhasan's palace, Arjun Durmmasena's, Nakul Chitrasena's, Sahadeva Durmukha's...Yudhishthira told all four of them to go relax in their new houses (this has got to be weird).

Yudhishthira dragged Draupadi to his own palace, she didn’t get her own palace. Krishna and Satyaki stayed with Vidur for a while, and then Krishna and Arjun went on a world-tour honeymoon. In Hastinapur, Krishna started spending the nights at Arjun's place, only going back to Vidur's for the meals.

Then Krishna wanted to go home but he was too shy to tell that to Yudhishthira so he made Arjun say it. Yudhishthira then told Krishna to go to the treasury and take whatever he wants from there as gifts for his parents. As compensation, Arjun got divyadrishti so now he can just look at Krishna 24/7 no matter where they both are.

Vasudev almost cursed Krishna for Abhimanyu, scaring him.

Also Bheeshma died back in Bheeshma parva only so no deathly parva-wide morality lecture! 🎉

All the women of the city now go out of their way to go cry in Yudhishthira's house for all he has done.

for Ashvamedha yajna Yudhishthira has to give up sex and Draupadi finally gets her own bed (not her own room still though).

Then Bheem and Vrishaketu [Karna’s youngest who survived the war] volunteered to go get the horse from Yuvanashva.

Yudhishthira: Pratigya karne se pehle sochna practise karo.

Bheem and Vrishaketu had a sweet moment with Bheem apologising for Karna. He's only 16 now. Meghavarna, Ghatotkach's son, who also survived the war also volunteered. He wants to shadow Arjun for this mission.

Their plan is Bheem and Vrishaketu should distract Yuvanashva with a battle while Meghavarna goes and steals the king's pet horse.

Yudhishthira is back on his my brothers are useless and are definitely trying to trick me by not winning the Yuvanashva war shtick already.

Yudhishthira nearly said bloody Krishna three times in front of a mirror and he appeared behind him. Actually, he appeared outside the door, and is now arguing with the guard

Guard: The king said you have full access just walk in please. Krishna: No, you go ask the king first, but don’t tell him I’m here if he's busy.

Waves of love coursed through Yudhishthira’s body upon hearing of Krishna’s arrival.

Krishna then called Bheem fat and poked his belly, Bheem said Krishna's got the whole universe inside his belly, so how come Bheem is fat but Krishna isn't. Then Krishna turned to Yudhishthira and said why don’t you use your own brain just like you did when you played dyut without asking for my permission back then.

This was followed by random Hidimba slander?

Bheem immediately hit back with so you can marry Jambavati and I can’t marry Hidimba? Krishna then accused Bheem of being controlled by his wives and Bheem reminded him of Satyabhama and Parijat.

I do not know why these two randomly started fighting.

Then Krishna went to Arjun's slept in his bed, 'merged their bodies' all night, gossiped, and then took a bath together before sunrise.

Next there's a horse chapter again. It’s just those three hiding in a bush staring at all the horses by the lake. Then they kidnapped the horse named Krisha and caused a minor earthquake in Amaravati. Indra was worried but calmed down when Meghavarna told him he's his great-grand-nephew.

Bheem, in the middle of the battle, told Meghavarna that if a wife doesn’t listen to her husband the family members should beat her up. 😭

Yuvanashva died but Vrishaketu brough him back to life by the power of Krishna's name. Yuvanashva is now going to Hastinapur with his wife to see Krishna. He also wants to see Rukmini and Jambavati but not the other wives. His wife Prabhavati is into Draupadi so that’s cool.

Bheem to Draupadi: Yudhishthira told you to wear a nice dress cause he's sending a pretty queen, and btw where's Krishna? Draupadi: Arjun's house, where else would he be, go look there I have a queen to receive.

Yuvanashva made such a fuss over Krishna that even Arjun was like brother I'm also here just so you knew.

Yudhishthira told Bheem to invite Yashoda, Devaki and Rohini also...here Krishna’s chief wives are Rukmini, Jambavati, Satyabhama, Yashomati and Lagnajita.

Yudhishthira: please also invite the other wives I've forgotten the names of.

Krishna is eating a heavy lunch, because Devaki has cooked a lot of food. Satyabhama made fun of him for that by calling him a 'bhukkad gwala' and Devaki yelled at her. Bheem reached in the middle and also got a meal...that was the point of mentioning that I guess...apart from the casteism.

Then everyone got to go Hastinapur except for Vasudev and Balram because it’s their turn to guard the city. 😭 Krishna invited everyone he saw on the street, across kingdoms, to come to Yudhishthira’s yajna.

Everyone likes the horse. Bheem is vindicated.

Then Shalva's brother Anushalva kidnapped the horse, so Krishna-Arjun and everyone else went to fight him.

Krishna: whoever volunteers for this mission will get One (1) paan from my hand.

So, they all formed a line now.

Krishna, if he liked them, also gave them One (1) kiss on the forehead.

Anushalva: Pradyumna, you are Kama, please go where people are having sex.

Pradyumna fainted in front of Krishna and Krishna started scolding him in public, “Why did you take paan from me then...get lost and don't show me your face again, you're not my son anymore and I hope some rishi curses you into ashes again.”

Bheem tried to intervene and then Krishna is like okay I forgive him, for now. Then Krishna fainted and Daruk had to run away with him to Yudhishthira [now who's the tough guy huh]. Satyabhama called Krishna a coward and sent him back.

Surya sent a chariot for Vrishaketu, and he finally managed to catch and tie up Anunshalva and then took him to Krishna. Anushalva said sorry and Yudhishthira is like from now you're my brother as well.

Then they all went to Kailash and, with permission, robbed Shiva.

The horse was then set free to roam for the year. Pradyumna, Vrishaketu, Meghavarna, Anushalva, Yuvanashva everyone basically went with Arjun. Krishna told Pradyumna to see Arjun like Yudhishthira sees Krishna, and then made Arjun wear anklets. Satyabhama made Arjun touch her feet. Yudhishthira told Arjun not to kill the sons of any king killed in Kurukshetra. Arjun made Krishna promise to wait for him in Hastinapur, and Yuvanashva's wife promised to always keep Draupadi hydrated, whatever it takes.

Then Maheshwari’s Prabira Sauti was 16 with an 8-yo wife named Ratnavati, but he catches the horse because his mistress Madanamanjari said he couldn’t, then he cut of Arjun's flag and got killed. Then his father Neeladhvaj, came to fight.

We find out Agni is married to Neeldhvaj's daughter and so Arjun has to pray to him first. Agni decided Khandava was a bigger favour than marriage so he told Neeladhvaj to give up.

The king also yelled at his wife Jana for sending him to fight "Krishna's second body".

Now while Jana crossed Ganga, the water touched her feet and she's cursed out the ground for letting that happen. apparently touching Ganga water with your feet gives you paap but bathing in it gives you punya.  Are they dunking people upside down like Oreos? Jana then called Ganga a sinner for drowning her kids, and so Ganga cursed Arjun that 8 months later his son is going to decapitate him. Jana then jumped into fire and a special arrow came out of the pyre, that Vyasa collected and delivered to Babhruvahan without telling him why.

Then they found Uddalaka who told them they should've given all their sins to Krishna, and instead they are running around behind this horse and Arjun said he likes Krishna too much to do that to him.

There was one Brahmin girl called Chandi, she was forcibly married another brahmin and when her father told her to listen to her husband and no one else, she got mad and vowed to do the exact opposite of whatever her husband told her to do...if he told her to take a bath, she stopped bathing, when he told her to cook, she broke all the utensils etc. Another rishi told the brahmin to tell her to do the opposite of what he wanted her to do, but then one day he forgot this and told Chandi to put something in the river and she threw it on the ground to the brahmin cursed her to become a stone until Arjun touches her.

Then Champaknagar's Hamsadhhaj planned to kidnap both Arjun and the horse so that Krishna would come to see him. Sudandhva, Hamsadhhaj’s son, got thrown into boiling oil and Krishna saved him by cooling down the oil, but the priests are really mad cause they think this is black magic. Then the priests got inside the vat but by touching Sudhanva so by transient property they also did not burn and are now Vaishnava. Ooh they are just collecting kings now...Neeladhvaj is also in their crew now.

Arjun's just standing outside waiting for them to resolve this family drama.

Sudhanva hit Arjun really bad and gave him a choice: either Krishna appears or he kills him. Arjun refused and started driving and fighting at the same time. Then Krishna appeared and got on the chariot and Arjun didn't even notice, just started barking instructions at him like in Kurukshetra. Arjun made a vow that if he can’t kill Sudhanva in 3 arrows then his family members should go to hell. Krishna sighed...not again.

Then Krishna poured his entire life's punya into Arjun's arrow to help him kill the dude, but Sudhanva used his own punya and cut that arrow. Then Krishna gave up his punya from Parashuram's life into the next arrow and again same thing. Last arrow had Rama's punya. Sudhanva cut this arrow also in half, but the tail end of the arrow still went and hit him in the heart.

Then his head also got cut but the head is alive, and so Krishna picked up the head and threw it in his father's face. Then the father threw the head back at Krishna, and then Krishna threw it into outer space where Shiva collected it for his own garland.

Now Sudhanva's brother Surath came to fight and Krishna's whispering into Arjun's ear that they are both punya-less now so it’s better to run away. They hid at the very back of the army but Surath found them out and shot an arrow that pierced through Krishna and hit Arjun.

Okay Arjun managed to kill him, but his head got yeeted at Arjun's tummy so fast that Arjun fell off his rath and fainted and then the head fell on Krishna's feet. Now Arjun got picked up by Krishna and they worshipped the head. Garuda then took the head to Prayag and dropped it in the water while fighting Nandi, Bhringi and Vrisha, but they picked it up from the water and took it back to Shiva.

Karna Parva

Duryodhana knows Karna's dad is Surya...he's like dancing around his secret.

Karna said he'd tolerate exactly 3 insults from Shalya and Duryodhana has promised him Shalya infinite insults though I don’t think we're going to revisit that.

Duryodhana dressed up Karna so he looks like a second Kama, and then gave him a small ceremonial stick [usually used for cattle-rearing] as the mark of his commandership.

The horses started crying because Shalya is so rude. Karna's chariot belonged to Parashuram and is covered in tiger-skin.

Karna: Even if Arjun joins Duryodhan today, I will still kill him!

Then he stomped his foot saying, "true, true, true!"

Karna said he will thread Krishna and Arjun on a thread like a storyteller suta threads stories together.

Now Dhritarashtra said Karna is param dharmik ...is this his accepting son-in-law arc?

Dhritarashtra: Karna is 100 times the man Shalya is so how dare he yell at my boy! Karna: I'm going to kill Arjun like the insect I killed after Parashuram woke up. Karna: I'll cover Arjun-the-sun with Karna-the-cloud. Karna: I'll kill Arjun in three arrows and then you and I don't ever have to be on the same rath as you ever again.

Karna apparently walks like a swan.

Karna defeated Nakul and Sahadev and told them never to try fighting him again and to chew grass as apology, and then Karna went and fainted in a duel with Yudhishthira?

Ok he woke up pushed Yudhishthira onto Sahadev's chariot, chased him as he was running, caught him by the proverbial collar and physical shoulder and called him a 'failed attempt at a brahmin'.

Duryodhana gets happier as Karna gets angrier.

Bheem yeeted 2 lakh elephants this time...he's levelled up.

Karna's arms are like rakta-chandan and Duryodhana has nearly covered them in jewellery and Yudhishthira is glaring at them. Karna saw him and threw a javelin at him and now Yudhishthira's like I wanna go home. Then he cut off Yudhishthira's horses' black tails.

Shalya knows about his vow to not kill the Pandavas? He's having to remind Karna.

Then Yudhishthira got naked? [I knew he put that rule in for himself!]

Then he went back to the tent and started hallucinating Karna in the room with him.

Arjun went to ask Bheem why he didn’t check up on Yudhishthira and Bheem said if he goes then Yudhishthir will yell at him, so he’s avoiding him.

Arjun then went to see him and let Yudhishthira yap on about Karna being dead for 2 pages without explaining. Then Yudhishthira yelled at him, Arjun tried to kill Yudhishthira, then Krishna stopped him with the story of a hunter boy whose parents are blind who killed a blind deer and went to heaven...again, what?

Yudhishthira then got scolded and now wants to walk into the battle without weapons hoping to get killed and Krishna has to hold his feet to stop him.

Arjun fainted.

Yudhishthira's like ok if you don’t kill Karna by sunset then I'll die.

Arjun was scared to face Karna, so Krishna told him Karna's a better warrior.

Krishna: you won't kill Kritavarma cause he's my relative, you won't kill Ashwatthama cause guruputra, Kripa because he's guru, Shalya cause he's your uncle...AT LEAST kill Karna, you've got nothing on him!

Bheem got confused (because he's worried about Arjun getting yelled at) and started killing Pandava soldiers...Vishoka had to remind him of the uniforms. He's scared if Yudhishthira killed Arjun or something.

I think Shikhandi ended up absorbing Virat's army and the upaPandavas are handling Drupad's portion.

Bheem says he's allowed to drink Dushy's blood cause they're brothers so it’s the same as sucking a cut on your own hand.

"Krishna's wounds make Arjun sick."

So, Karna son Vrishasen aimed for Krishna's feet, because that's the weirdest position for Arjun to defend. Arjun killed him instead.

Then Indra and Surya came...Indra brought medicine, Surya hovered 'beside Karna's eyes'.

The big snakes took Arjun's side and the small snakes took Karna's. of course, devas supported Arjun and asurs supported Karna. Both fathers whispered in their son's ear and both got told to f off.

So, then Indra and Surya both went to Brahma and Indra is at his feet reminding him that Brahma already blessed Arjun to win, and Brahma's like dude Narayan's down there, this is kind of out of my hands, but I promise Karna will get a really good loka once he's up here.

Half the people in the sky have started fighting before even the main two began.

Krishna and Shalya had a staring match. Karna and Arjun also had the same match, and Krishna and Arjun won.

Karna: What will you do if I die? Shalya: I'll kill both Arjun and Krishna? Arjun: What will you do if I die? Krishna: You won't but if you do, I'll tear them apart with my bare hands. :)

Ashwatthama then tried to convince Duryodhana to make peace.

Ashvatthama: I'll convince all of them, it'll be easy. Except for Bheem, Shikhandi, Dhrishtadyumna.....etc. Ashvatthama: You'll be really sad if Karna dies, you should think about that. Ashvatthama: Karna will never hug you with those arms again, he'll never call you Mitra! Duryodhana: You concentrate on fighting please...and the Pandavas don't like me enough for peace.

Arjun got a fever because Karna fought so hard. Then Bheem said maybe Krishna was right, maybe you can't kill Karna and Arjun was back to being fine in a second.

Arjun: I made a vow at Bheem's feet and I shall keep it.

And then, ‘because he sought entertainment’, Yudhishthira arrived there.

Ashvasena's arrow is being described like a woman. It's got a golden mouth, a lot of pearls, decorated with chandan and Ashvasena-as-a-snake sleeps with it while Karna does its puja.

Karna was about to fire, but Shalya physically stopped him from firing three times and distracted him so Karna couldn't properly aim it.

One of the funniest parts of this parva has been Shalya being his charioteer the whole time and them bickering like toddlers.

Seeing this arrow, Krishna did magic and Arjun became temporarily shorter + he pushed the chariot into the mud. the mukut falling off made Arjun shy and he tied a pagdi like Krishna's cause otherwise Karna won’t fight him.

Dhritarashtra: I knew Karna was a bad guy, look at how he's not killing Arjun!

Oof Arjun cut off half of Karna’s ears with the magic earrings. "Karna now looks freshly widowed."

Arjun's armour has a bunch of peacock feathers sewn onto it, and they're all getting drenched in blood.

Arjun nearly jumped off the chariot to run away.

Krishna: why isn't your brain working today? All your battles have been a child's escapade, today I have understood that. Krishna: You dare subject me to Karna like this?!

Udhar Karna's wheel went, and he's screaming and throwing his hands around like a toddler. Karna had been looking like a golden replica of Karna because of all the jewellery Duryodhana made him wear and now Arjun's cut them off one by one.

Krishna: sunai nahi de raha...maarne ko bola maine!

The horses are dead, Shalya is scared.

Karna shot an arrow at Krishna's hand and took off a ring/finger I can’t tell which. Or the stick he's using.

Karna's hair also came undone and he tried to convince Arjun to pause for that.

Arjun's ear, mouth and nose emitted actual fire? I’m imagining that angry Chota Bheem aur Krishna scene.

Karna hit him with something and Arjun fell asleep. He's snoring?! Krishna pulled him up to a standing position and shook him.

Krishna got his bow and arrow ready, and handed it to Arjun while Karna cried angrily trying to pull up the wheel.

Arjun: If I am a true servant of Krishna let this arrow kill Karna.

Karna's soul merged with Krishna's.

Krishna then hugged Arjun and twirled him around.

Duryodhana rolled on the ground crying for Karna, and kept fainting, and hitting the ground and getting up and failing and falling.

The Others: People will laugh at you, king! Duryodhana: Bhad mein jaye people!

Duryodhana is still on the ground crying like his boat capsized, like his precious gem was stolen, like he was a deer caught in a trap, like a merchant who lost his wares, like a toothless snake kicked in the mouth.

Bheeshma Parva

Before the war, among other things, newborn kids started singing songs. Stars started shining during the day, the sun slugged and the moon looked like the sun.

While Bheeshma was being sworn in/bathed, several married women came and started dancing uncomfortably in his presence.

Then Bheeshma got told to kill everybody and everyone else is supposed to try and kill Shikhandi. Duryodhana phrased it like Shikhandi's a man forced to be born as a woman…he did just order everyone to kill him but we're halfway to allyship.

Now there was a brahmachandal, made of the vegetable Mooli [radish, imma just keep calling him that], who infiltrated the armies and started killing everyone on both sides. All the important people started running away. Krishna then half-killed him with chakra and set him down on a hill to watch the fight quietly.

Backstory: Turns out Mr. Mooli is actually Ekalavya, who died and became a walking vegetable. When Drona found out, he went to take a bath, but Mooli followed him holding his bathing oil. Then Drona set his oil ka dabba down on a tree branch and Mooli cut down the branch but the oil still floated so Drona took his right thumb as Dakshina. Then Mooli asked Yudhishthira if he could help them but Yudhishthira said no cause caste, then he went to Duryodhana and got same treatment and so he decided to kill everyone.

This is Ekalavya, Barbaeek and Rukmi all rolled into one.

The whole next chapter is 'Horse Description', describing who has how many horses in what all colours.

Everyone else has 2/4 Shikhandi has several, in all possible colours

Dhrishtadyumna has 2 whites,

Drupad has 2 goldens with red ears,

Virat has 4 blacks

Bheeshma has orange ones with golden ears

Drona, Yudhishthira, Bheem and Karna have red ones

Nakul has glass coloured 4 horses

Sahadev has shanapushpa coloured ones

Duryodhana has white,

Dushhasana blue,

Ashvatthama bull-coloured

etc etc they went through pretty much everybody.

Here Draupadi's birth name is Dhrishtamati, which is cute but I don’t like when the sisters get given the same name as their brothers, it feels like neglect.

Here, Yudhishthira's making the war rules not Bheeshma.

The usual equal duels should happen etc. etc., the list of people not to hit:

1. people who supply extra weapons,

2. on-chariot musicians

3. someone who's not taking it seriously

4. messengers

5. people who seek refuge

6. naked people

7. people with open hair

8. someone who's not holding a bow

9. someone who's running away

10. someone who's fighting someone else

Yudhishthira tried get Arjun to lead a faction and Arjun said that's too much ask someone else because CAN’T YOU SEE I’VE KRISHNA ON MY RATH???

Also Krishna and Arjun keep calling each other mahashaya and it’s really funny. Then, Krishna didn’t do Virat swaroop here instead he made Arjun see headless bodies for everyone who will die.

Karna's still hanging around in the battlefield, even though he’s not fighting. I think he's just sitting back, backseat driving both Duryodhana and Duryodhana's sarathi.

Krishna told him look how your bff didn’t make you Senapati. Then Krishna asked him whether it was out of sight out of mind, or did Duryodhana intentionally ignore him. Karna started then shushing him because he thought that the next step is for Krishna to just blurt out his birth secret.

Bheeshma is apparently 13,000 years old.

Then Bheeshma hit Krishna, and so Arjun shot a shivering arrow at him and he fainted. Krishna got angry, snatched Gandeev and was about to kill Bheeshma. But Arjun caught hold of the reins and turned the chariot so the arrow went somewhere else.

Vishok, Bheem’s sarathi was being sweet with Bheem, while 60,000 elephants ran wild in the field. One elephant yeeted Bheem's rath. The chariot went through Bheem who still stood on the ground right there. Bheem then hit the ground with his gada and all 60,000 elephants flew into the sun never to be seen again.

Sahadev and Nakul danced at the end of the day, while Yudhishthira sang for them, with Satyaki and Dhrishtadyumna sitting with arms around each other in front of a fire.

They took time out of the battle to tell us Arjun's a little shorter than Bheeshma.

IRAVAN HAD A BROTHER called Satyavan here, both got killed...actually called Iravanta and Saityavanta. Here, Uloopi isn’t their mother, it’s an apsara called Varahi who Vyasa forced Arjun to marry while he was in Amaravati? Possibly, an Uloopi-Varga-Urvashi khichdi. Arjun only agreed to the marriage on the condition that they'll fight in the war and if they die then no one will hold Arjun responsible.

Also, Bheeshma during this fight once threw and broke his own bow because he was mad that these tiny kids broke his other bow.

Sanjay, while explaining their story, said Yudhishthira, the evil-minded, conspired and sent Arjun away (the first exile).

Uttamauja kept fighting Shakuni like every day he found this guy and fought him till sunset. Shakuni couldn’t even run away because Uttamauja kept chasing him until he was ready to fight again.

Ashvatthama has one white horse and one red horse...they do not get along...this is hampering his battle experience.

They also apparently have dedicated dancers who follow the warriors around and reenact the duels for mocking purposes.

Dhrishtadyumna defeated Bheeshma, but Bheeshma's all like Ashwatthama has vowed to kill you, go talk to Krishnarjun I’m going.

They've also dragged either Amba's or Krishna's Shalva to fight here…both of them should be very dead by now but no I guess.

Bheeshma fainted and Krishna, still bleeding profusely, told Arjun to kill him now but Arjun refused. Krishna shook his head and drove the rath away.

Yudhishthira insisted they should sing and dance all night even though no one's in the mood and Krishna and Arjun went off to do puja together at the river.

Bheeshma keeps saying Arjun is in his early youth. I mean if you're 13,000, 50-60 does look quite young.

Duryodhana asked him to resign and let Karna do his thing but Bheeshma said no thanks. He also called Shikhandi Vishaal. Also I love that in those old books 'unserious' is 'tarala', as in liquid.

Krishna just came and messed up Dhrishtadyumna's vyuh. He also told Daruka to get Arjun's horses drunk, and to pick up extra drummers to keep in the chariot.

Hanuman is yelling at everyone with his ears and tail raised. Though, they never acknowledge that its Hanuman. They just call it the 'dhvaj-vanar', and that could be anyone, either Hanuman or his intern or a robot, possibilities endless.

Abhimanyu then broke Bheeshma's chariot and he said Abhimanyu is a lion cub and he is an old elephant. Arjun saw Abhimanyu also without chariot so picked him up but then collapsed due to exhaustion.

Arjun woke up saw Bheeshma's carnage and decided he's not going to fight anymore, and Yudhishthira is also like jungle chalo. Then after sunset them and Yudhishthira decide to go to Bheeshma and so along the way Krishna and Arjun did puja...but separately this time.

Yudhishthira actually went there to tell Bheeshma's he's going to the forest, Krishna just let him yap for a while and then they figured out the Shikhandi plan.

Again the author felt the need to specify, explicitly, that Yudhishthira went to sleep in his own room, and then Krishna slept on a flower bed and Arjun on a grass bed on the floor "and then they slept only for a very short time".

Yudhishthira came and woke them up in the morning. Then Krishna and Arjun sat in the same seat, and Yudhishthira called and forced Dhrishtadyumna and Shikhandi also share one other seat.

Shikhandi is also born from the fire here? I thought the fish device....maybe Yudhishthira just has his facts a little muddled.

Daruka is now helping dress both Arjun and Krishna.

Shikhandi looks like shiva on Arjun's rath and Bheeshma clarified Shikhandi is built of fire. Also the chapter is named 'Bheeshma-bhanga' which is neat.

Bheeshma got 'mohit' by looking at Arjun and Shikhandi together, which gave them the advantage to start shooting. Arjun took a small detour to also defeat Drona and Ashvatthama.

Bheeshma ran away. Also, they were I think fighting in the sky? Bheeshma I think was for the first time understanding that he was about to die.

Duryodhana: why did you make me break up with Karna if you won’t even kill the Pandavas.

Dhrishtadyumnawas very angry Shikhandi was being forced to cut down arrows meant for Arjun instead of getting to kill Bheeshma. He's yelled at Arjun to watch Shikhandi’s back instead of the other way around.

"They made my brother a virathi [chariot-less] and won't even let him do his thing!"

Then Bheeshma ran away again.

Dhritarashtra asked what Arjun is looking like and Sanjay replied he has a long nose, beautiful arms and head, just like a fantastic horse [Kabi Sasnjay I get that horses are cute but could we get the story please?].

Bheeshma started hallucinating Yama in Shikhandi, as Arjun and Shikhandi coordinated and started firing in parallel.

Sanjay called Dhritarashtra a kapat sanyasi and root of everyone's troubles,

"You wanted to hear about the war so shut up and listen."

Krishna told Arjun to kill Bheeshma but Arjun refused to fire any more.

So Krishna indicated to Shikhandi and he started firing aiming for the gaps in the armour that Arjun created...because his own arrows won’t go through.

“Angrily Krishna said, Listen Dhananjaya Strength, intelligence, knowledge it seems you have none of those”

Sanjay is really enjoying their fight, he said so.

Yudhishthira defeated Duryodhana, somehow?

Krishna is like I get it you're sad, can you be sad after killing him though?

I am sorry, but the clownery continues.

Arjuna’s Exile

Narad said if anyone slept with Draupadi in someone's else time, then they’d be exiled. Dhritarashtra started sending Duryodhana every day to Indraprastha to say hello to Yudhishthira. Well, hello and good morning.

Yudhishthira was having sex with Draupadi in the armoury and left his sandals outside as a do-not-disturb sign, and their pet puppy took it and ran away so Arjun entered the armoury without knocking, and then described Yudhishthira's lovemaking to Dhaumya the next morning who promptly spread the gossip to everyone else.

Yudhishthira cursed the puppy. He said cause because of it everyone knows how Yudhishthira has sex so from now everyone will see dogs having sex too. Dhaumya had begun scolding Yudhishthira only for not leaving his chappal outside but then they backtracked and pinned the dog.

Arjun tried to kill himself but then Dhaumya told Arjun to go to Patal for 12 years.

Here, Uloopi's father-in-law saw Arjun coming down and dragged him to go sleep with Uloopi because he wanted an heir. Unfortunately, after this the Chitrangada and 50% of the Subhadra pages are missing. We only know that Shiva and Parvati came down to give background music for Subhadra's marriage. Subhadra's necklace also tore cause of the wedding (the metaphor is tiresome), and then they had to draw with sandalwood paste on each other's chests.

Then Subhadra prayed to Prajapati asking for this month-cycle to be the last one she has to have relations and the gods were pleased with that and let her become pregnant with Abhimanyu. Here, Abhimanyu is actually Chandra, who comes down as 15/16th of his complete powers, and the other 1/16th part remains in the sky.

Khandava

The story is the same, so I’ll just put in the funny dialogue. I swear no one takes anything seriously in this book.

Indra: Arjun's blameless, that Krishna is the source of all the problems in my life.

Indra: “Bravo son, you are a true son of mine, Being a son you defied my orders. Krishna, you are devious and a [insert caste-based slur], You are making a father and son fight.”

^He is still salty about the Parijat wars.

“Arjun, hearing this folded his hands, Why do you scold him not knowing the truth? Agni came to us in the form of a brahmin, Krishna and I are not to blame.”

Then Arjun said Krishna would have lost if Arjun wasn’t helping him.

“Hearing Arjun say that, Indra hid his face in his uttariya and laughed. Krishna laughed, sitting on the chariot. To Arjun said Indra, Keep your Khandava, I'm going home, You broke your father's property, Nevermind the consequences.”

Arjun also got his own magic kavach!

And then the author told us explicitly that Krishna went to the guest house and Arjun went to Subhadra's palace...you know so we don’t get any ideas. Then he said specifically Arjun slept with Subhadra and Krishna slept with Rukmini…again, if you might’ve assumed something. However, before he went home, Krishna did take the time to go to every single relative of theirs to tell them that Arjun's the best-est warrior ever!

Then they gave a list of what all Arjun did during 12 years and the sequence is really funny:

He married Uloopi, had Iravanta, He married Chitrangada, had Babhruvahan, He married Subhadra, He said hello to Krishna, had Abhimanyu.
