Kitchen Conversation - 9th May 2017
A busy evening for Neighbourhood Theatre: following the last quarterly meeting of NhT’s first year, and a Q&A with Artistic Director David Lan, members attended a Kitchen Conversation event.
Kitchen Conversations (originally called Kitchen Talks) were started as part of Neighbourhood Theatre back in September last year, and have been held regularly every couple of months at the Young Vic. The events aim to welcome and meet people who are refugees, either newly arrived in the community, or who have been living locally for a while. Members and guests are invited to bring food to share, to eat together, chat and mingle.
Tonight, NhT members welcomed 25 guests, including a number of children. The evening started with everyone standing in a circle, introducing themselves, followed by a quick game, which was a great way of breaking the ice and helping everyone relax.
There was loads of food - more than could be eaten in one evening - and guests and members sat around in groups eating and chatting together. The atmosphere was really relaxed, warm and friendly. Many of the guests, and members of NhT, expressed how much they had enjoyed the evening. One guest told me that she had initially been reluctant to come, but had then arranged to meet family and friends to travel to the Young Vic together, and was delighted that she had changed her mind.
Witnessing an event like this really highlights the part a community initiative such as Neighbourhood Theatre can play in our society. It gave a real sense of people coming together, and feels like a really important part of breaking down barriers between people.

By evoking Rodney’s name, Zachari reminded us that in the U.S. revolutionary moments have been cynically cyclical. Emmett Till, Sean Bell, Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown. The brutal events and their aftermaths have become formulaic: (1) a precious24 Black cis-gender25 male life is violently taken by a white policeman or person assuming the same authority; (2) widespread public uproar and outrage; (3) some racial justice organizers try to ride the public wave of attention; (4) strong status quo backlash; (5) cultural amnesia sets in and interest wanes; (6) white supremacy feeds on apathy and gets stronger; and (7) organizers return to work on the calcified racial politics that remain. Our parents held the same aspirations about a shift in racial consciousness after Rodney King’s beating, which—like Eric Garner’s murder—was inhumane, captured on video, and caused widespread anger and protest after state authorities absolved the officers of responsibility

Обсуждала сегодня с ребятами на работе мои месячники добра и окончательно сформулировала косяк в моих жизненных установках (после полугода моей затеи, каково).
Я всю жизнь стремилась к сбалансированной жизни (work-life balance, you know), страдала от его отсуствия, а оказалось, что его нет. Тупо нет.
В какие-то месяцы я забрасывала чтение, бег, сон, йогу, медитацию, рисование, тупку, Костю, девочек, английский, учебу, родителей и даже чуть работу (тссс) в пользу чего-то другого из того же списка, более важного. В общем чего-то было всегда больше, а чего-то за этот счет меньше. И я не была от этого несчастлива, а даже наоборот.
Я знала, почему я это делаю, какие полезные для себя результаты я из этого извлеку, и это была моя воля. Если я чувствовала потребность, договаривалась с другими о смене парадигмы.
Похоже, где-то когда-то я прочитала про гармонию в жизни, и перепутала ее с дихотомией "белое-черное" и предсказуемо-бетонным распределением всего того, что я хотела бы делать, типа: полная жизнь - это когда напихивается все: 15 минут работаешь, 15 минут рисуешь, 15 минут говоришь с Костей и т.д.
Гармония - возможность в каждый момент жить так, чтобы можно было ответить на свои "почему" и "что" и сделать лучший выбор из имеющегося меню - вот моя новая религия.
Мои более взрослые коллеги усмехаются, кажется они что-то знают.
