for the sentence prompts: "i thought this was gonna be a bigger deal." <3
Eddie’s mouth was soft, against Buck’s, the curve of his smile pressed into the corners of Buck’s lips, unfamiliar in the way it felt, the way it tasted – the happiness of it all was unfamiliar too. Buck had imagined what their first kiss would be like more times than he’d care to admit – he’d imagined desperate kisses in the rain (blame Maddie, for the steady diet of romantic movies she’d raised him on), and he’d imagined confessions after a bad incident at work, but he had never imagined this: Eddie’s hand gently cupping the squared line of Buck’s jaw, the older man touching him like he was something precious.
It was terrifying how terrifying it wasn’t.
All the times that Buck had imagined this –
He had thought that it would feel like the very core of his life was shaken to the core, the moment he kissed Eddie for the first time. A change so fundamental – how would it not be terrifying? To be crossing that line, and moving from friends, to more, that would have to be utterly terrifying. Buck had been so sure of that much, at least.
Except –
Eddie was kissing him, and Buck had never felt more at home, more at peace, than he did right in that moment.
Eddie was trying to catch his breath, as they broke apart, his cheeks flushed pink and his eyes crinkling at the corners with utter delight as he studied Buck’s face carefully. He was beautiful – that was one of the other things that Buck knew for sure. Eddie Diaz was beautiful, in all the ways that someone could be beautiful, from the way his eyes scrunched up with delight when he laughed, to the way he cared so deeply for the people he loved the most in the world.
Eddie was beautiful –
And he had just kissed Buck for the first time.
"I thought this was gonna be a bigger deal,” Buck found himself saying, before he could really even think about it: because honestly, he had thought it was going to be a bigger deal. He’d wanted this – him and Eddie – to happen, but he had been so sure that it was going to be this big, scary, terrifying moment.
Except –
It wasn’t.
It was life affirming, in the easiest ways – like it came naturally, as though loving Eddie was as easy as breathing.
(It was, Buck knew.)
Eddie smiled, in that soft, kind way he always did, the expression dripping with love – how could Buck have missed all of that love? – his hand gently caressing the curve of Buck’s jaw. “Buck,” he hummed, pressing a brief, tiny kiss to Buck’s lips. “Why would this be anything except easy?”
Buck couldn’t help but laugh, the relief coming from his toes, the whole way up – because, well, of course Eddie would believe that. Eddie was more of an optimist than he’d care for anyone else to know – but Buck always knew, because he knew Eddie better than anyone else in the world.
“You think this will be easy?” Buck hummed, brushing Eddie’s hair back off his forehead, pressing a kiss to one of those gloriously happy looking lines at the corner of Eddie’s eyes.
Eddie grinned, and Buck wished he could bottle the way the expression made him feel. “It’s me and you,” he said simply. “Of course it’s going to be easy.”
