World Building for the Feature Film: Nyo Locations
Since the inspiring workshop with Gill White, I’ve been thinking of the world building of Andros, especially for the full feature script. For practical matters, I divided the process into three sections: Locations, Characters and Sociology (rituals and habits). Of course the three sections are connected and influence one another, as for instance a location may imply in a character - a school implies a tutor, a farm implies a farmer, and vice-versa.
These sections are been developed on google drive and Marie has been the main collaborator on this process, once the world building is also related to her thesis.
Below, there are the locations that I have thought so far. They are not definitive, of course, and many of them imply other questions about the women habits, organization and relationships among themselves and with the outside world:
AGORA (aka Community Centre): Where the women of Nyo join for assembly. It can also be merged as a place that serves as a base for parties, also where you can have indoor concerts, plays, watch films… Do they make films (even if they are amateur videos)?
BARN and HEN HOUSE: Where they keep the animals at night, where they shear the sheep, milk the cows…
BEACH: It is an Island, so it has a beach. What do they do at the beach? Training - swimming and gym? Do they ever have leisure on the beach?
FARMS (PLANTATIONS and HYDROPONIC GREENHOUSES): The source of vegetables on the Island are small plantations, gardens and hydroponic greenhouses with controlled temperature that allow the women to have a variety of fresh vegetables during the whole year.
HARBOUR: Fundamental since it is a fisherwomen community. I think they must have at least 2 working fishing boats and small boats and canoes.
Do they have any commercial relations with the continent and men? Would they be able to export anything?
INFIRMARY, CLINIC and LABORATORY: Where they heal people with diseases or injuries, perform the inseminations, do exams, give birth (?) - maybe they give birth at home, or in a ritual in a bathtub... How technologically advanced is this place?
LIGHTHOUSE: It is turned on during the fishing nights to guide the fisherwomen, and also during storm days.
SCHOOL and KINDERGARTEN: Where girls up to 18 years old go to study. Marie, do you think they have kindergarten? Or is there any scheme of education for the small ones? Are they educated at home until 6-7?
Right now, I think it would be more like the school that Lia works: children of different age learning fundamental skills (motor and intellectual) in a very free environment.
What about education in general? It makes no sense to split them into grades by age, right? How many tutors are there? Every adult has to be a tutor at some point? What do they study, how are classes organized?
WAREHOUSE: Where they keep the goods they produce, tools, materials. The warehouse works as a general shop, except people don’t have to buy things, but have a share of all that is produced on the Island.
Is there a general warehouse manager, that is responsible for the inventory and has to judge cases in which people need more than their monthly right?
WORKSHOP: Where things on the island are built and refurbished. Since the people on the island has to live with limited resources, building and fixing things is essential. Also, they have to fix or adapt things, reusing old technology previous to their independence, therefore is a low-fi island.
