Whew chile. This book. A debut novel that tackles race, class, and privilege. The beginning of the novel starts with Emira Tucker called in for a late impromptu babysitting emergency for the well-off white family The Chamberlins. Emira takes almost 3 year old Briar to Market Depot to kill some time and is accosted by a white customer and security guard who believe she is kidnapping Briar. The novel that follows jumps between Emira, 25 year old black woman who is struggling to find purpose and a job with benefits and Alix Chamberlin, white mid 30s mom and LetHerSpeak lifestyle guru with a newscaster husband and a book deal looming. Throw in Emira's new boyfriend Kelley, white man 7 years her senior who she met while he filmed the "incident" and turns out to have a past connection with Alix. *SPOILERS* This book is full of "very nice liberal white people" who believe they know whats best for Emira. Seeing Alix and Kelley fight over Emira like she was their own personal negro had clapping for Emira when she was like "yeah nah I'm good" to both Alix and Kelley. I will say that I did feel like at least with Kelley he had genuine feelings for Emira but his white savior complex and paternalism felt icky. Alix however fell in love with the idea of what she thought Emira represented and then was willing to stomp right over anything Emira wanted in order to get the relationship she desired. Alix is every very nice white woman who "doesn't have a racist bone in her body", voted for Obama twice, is curious about Black culture, is quite sure she knows what's best for the Black people in her life and is willing to re-imagine history so she is the victim of any wrongdoing rather than admitting she is problematic. Can I just say everyone deserves to have a friend like Zara? 💫 April Wrap💫 April was rough but I pushed through! This “New Normal” gave me H E 🏒🏒! Some of the books I read for this month, I wasn’t ready for. 🌼 I started the month learning the real definition of Careful What You Click For (ARC). 🌼Tried to follow it up with Such a Fun Age which couldn’t hold my attention or my eyes open long enough so I put it down. 🌼Queenie had my nerves bad with her poor decisions but I was truly ecstatic about bringing Awareness about Mental Health in the black community that goes ignored because some people think that it brings shame to the family if they seek therapy. 🌼I found a new love in Poetry with Milk and Honey. 🌼 I found out Monster-in-Laws might be a blessing in disguise in The Other Woman. 🌼 I ended April with a bang with The Last Mrs. Parrish and I learned everything that glitters ain’t gold honey!
