Class Feature Friday: Explorer Specialization (Operative Specialization)
Whether it is on frontier worlds far from civilized space, or on more civilized worlds with active biospheres, vast tracts of wild, and so on, there will inevitably be a use for operatives that are at home far from the comforts of civilization.
Whether they are stealth commandos that travel into the wilderness far away from organized military, assassins that strike from the intractable wilds, or merely actual explorers that have trained themselves to master survival.
Either way, operatives with this specialization have to be incredibly self-sufficient, after all, one wrong move in the wilds could mean your end, with no support from civilization to save you. Thus, those who train in this specialization are often among the best, even among civilian wanderers.
These explorers are not only adept survivalists, but also well-versed in cultural interaction, appropriate for cultures they might find in the wild places of various worlds. What’s more, in combat they are extremely adept at using their environment around them to gain an edge.
Danger can come at any time in the wilds, so these agents are light sleepers and quick to react to combat situations.
While they can be somewhat relaxed in familiar space, these scouts on full alert when entering unfamiliar space and worlds, all the better for them to react to new dangers.
A simple specialization for those operatives with a knack for traveling in the wild, they are almost always going to be able to get in swings early in a combat. As such, I recommend weapons, feats, and exploits with debuffing effects, as well as equipment useful for survival and so on.
In the far-future of Starfinder, explorer operatives might be the classic misanthropic loners, or they might be passionate wildlife enthusiasts, possibly even be scientists in their own right. Others may simply enjoy the outdoors, while others might be survivalists out of necessity, hailing from worlds where survival is the only choice.
As a nomadic species, it only makes sense that the mothlike kiirinta make for excellent survivalists and scouts. However, their tendency to embellish their reports makes them unappealing to many disciplined military operations. However, the patient can help their insectile allies understand when is the proper time for storytelling.
Three years ago, a survivalist named Kuna booked passage as part of a colony caravan heading for a new world, flying away on a converted fire whale vessel. That colony has recently dropped off the radar, and now Kuna’s sister, Pvada, is looking to hire a crew to go investigate.
The shattering of glass followed by the distant cracking echo of a shot was the only indicator of the sniper that tried to take out a formian diplomat while they ate with dignitaries. The party is tasked with tracing the bullet back to it’s source in the rainforest beyond, but it won’t be easy, the would-be assassin is a skilled survivalist.
