Picky Picky

Okay, can we just talk about how iconic that opening line is? “Like it, don’t like it. Love it, don’t want it. Weki Meki, I’m so picky.” That was stuck in my head from the moment I heard it. The second time it’s iterated, they added some really great harmonies to it that made it sound even better. The bass line in this song is super funky and all over the place. It’s got like a playful but mature vibe to it in my opinion. The first half of the chorus really shows us how powerful the girls’ vocals are, especially Doyeon, as she stood out to me the most. I thought it was funny, I caught that right after Sei says “hate it” there’s a little scream sound in the background. The bridge feels very well done by the girls, I think that whoever decided who gets to sing what made a good choice because it sounded very strong and meaningful. And I also like that the song ends the way it began. Sometimes I think having an ending similar to the beginning can be a bad choice but in this case I think it was definitely the right decision since the line is so catchy. I think the thing that makes this song so great is that the melodies are interesting. There are a lot of things going on throughout the song that mesh together really well!

Whatever U Want

At the beginning of this song, I really felt like it almost could have been a boy group song. The intro just had something about it that gave me boy group vibes. I liked the prechorus with the muffled percussion sounds, and I felt that the chorus was super cute an sweet. It almost sounded like video game music for a racing game. That’s the vibe it gave me at least. I really enjoyed Yoojung’s part in the second verse. It was charming and still very cool. I think one thing I would have changed a little is that during the bridge I think that bass could have been a little louder, a little more present in the song. The bass does some cool things during the bridge and I think it would have aided in setting the mood of the bridge some more as well. I also don’t think that the added instrumental outdo was necessary and the song could have just ended after the last chorus, but I would assume that it probably has to do with the choreo having an outro as well. In any case, this is a nice song and I look forward to hearing the next one!

Petal Fortune

Wow, I was not expecting anything like this! This song was so pretty, it honestly caught me off guard. The beginning felt so magical—it almost reminded me of a Barbie movie or something. I liked the choices of percussion samples used in the song because they were all very soft samples like scratch sounds, snapping, and even what sounds like coins jangling to keep the hits from being too blatantly percussive. The synths in the chorus added a very pretty texture alongside the girls’ voices as well. Again, the melodies feel very carefully crafted to fit the song. The last chorus was so pretty and grandiose, and then the outro went back to soft which was really beautiful. I really enjoyed every second of this song.

Overall Feelings

This was a very good first impression for me, as I have never listened to Weki Meki’s b-sides before. The melodies in these songs must have been well thought-out, because they work so well together. I really like the three songs that we got for this comeback, and I’m super excited to hear what they have in store for us in the future after hearing all of this!
