Of Choppers and of our Country
So world looks pretty green, mates. Things are pretty much on track and for miles there is nothing wrong in a big way that can cause a reasonable wealthy Indian to be unhappy about. The markets are good, the inflation is still at large â but what the heck! We got used to them. And once we get used to, no problem is a problem anymore! Osama is dead, so is his brother, son in law, brother in law, his 133rd son and his âlatestâ wife (US Intelligence still working to find out if she was 78th wife or 93rd wife of him). So, no 9/11 possibility in a couple of years, till Quaida comes up with a new leader.
Now we have the world cup too. And Yuvraj is back from his bad patch and reportedly getting laid off 33.33% more than before. And now none is unhappy about it, after all he kinda deserves it â is the attitude of his fans and half-fans. Dhoni is demanding almost double for what he does best â which is making ads! And so on itâs all happiness around for a happy Indian urban family.
Dorji Khandu (he was the late CM of Arunachal Pradesh, I understand only 2% of us might have heard of him before, cause only around 2% of urban people plan to sit for IAS UPSC each year.) was not really born out of womb of Sonia Gandhi or had looks of a spoiled rich young politician who can do all kinda nonsense and still win the election by sheer âcharmâ. And definitely he wasnât having luck on his side. May be he was trying to do something good for his largely avoided state. Or maybe he was just plain random unlucky. But one thing is for sure, even for a âdevelopingâ nations standards the politicians that died in India out of helicopter clashes are huge. And I am only talking about the relatively famous ones. Starting from a hooligan called Sanjay Gandhi to Mr YSR Reddy, the trend is higher. The latter got much more sympathy since he was on a cause when that fateful steel bird went down, and justifiably so. And the former had enough credentials by his name (he was Indira Gandhiâs son! What do you expect!). The good part is, as always, no one is looking. Apart from the usual tch-tching people are simply not bothered. I canât blame them. After all death of politicians are not really a sad scene particularly. But then all are not the same in the game. I will definitely give Mr Khandu a benefit of doubt in this case. Been to some of the interior places of north east, I know life is tough there and terrorist is not their only problem or the biggest one. People are poor and the states like Arunachal Pradesh has a lot of defense expenditure particularly because we have friendly neighboring states like China.
Either way the defense system in India seriously needs to be taken hard look at. Defense is a golden goose of corruption which has been tortured so many times in so many innovative ways (who could think of a Coffin Gate before Kargil happened! ) that in a way it is even coming back at the politicians sometime. Corruption has his side effects after all. Think of the last thoughts that crossed the minds of Madhavrao Sindhia or YSR or Mr Khandu. I bet the cursed their profession one last time before it went down n hit the hard ground. Of all the tragic accidents Mr Khanduâs is definitely the most tragic one. With all the innovative radars and GPS, it took 5 days before they could locate the area. So itâs not only the Paki radars which could be the butt of jokes on internet (I read Paki radars are getting second hand sold by Govt cause it doesnât catch US copters but catches Sony Max alright)..! We have a long way to go with corruption, people. And frankly speaking, I have an eerie feeling about the journey.
