I’ll never forget how insecure Stansa’s got when the Key Five was revealed, complained about it and then to cope they created the ‘Core Six’ and actually ties into their continuous stream of passing of fanon as canon and at the same time being the usual delusional bunch they’ve always been
What's really funny is that they still confidently claim that the Key Five doesn't mean anything, solely because she isn't a part of it. The Core Six is a completely fanon invention but people talk about it like it's fact. They want her to be more important than she is so badly that they're straight up ignoring the author. And yes, until otherwise stated by George, the Key Five are still a thing. Tbh I'm not sure if there was ever a time that they engaged with the source material though? A lot of them came from the show (*cough*fanfiction) so that's where a majority of their takes are coming from. That's why we get people saying things like "Sansa charmed George off the page" or "Sansa took Arya's place as George's favorite Stark sister". They just desperately want the show to match up with the books. What's annoying is that her not being a part of the Key Five doesn't mean she isn't important, but people take it as hate towards her. It's sad that the only version of her they like is her fanon one.
Of course, Stansas don't care about the Key Five concept, that's why they totally didn't tried (and failed) to push the Core Six concept 😭
They definitely would be defending the idea with all their might if they could've convinced everybody else in the fandom to go along with it, but since they couldn't it has to mean nothing 😭

I think it's another case of people acting as though their interpretation of the books is more important then the story being told. If the concept of the "key five" came from fans that would be one thing, but it comes from George himself. He has stated multiple times how he has know their endings since the beginning. So even IF (big if) they are no longer meant to be the main characters, there would still be a distinction between them and the other characters.
Personally I don't see chapter count as the sole indicator of who the Key Five are and definitely not when we still have two books left in the series. It's impossible to tell what the final chapter count will be. But let's say that was the case, that chapter count was that important. We would still have the "Key" characters with Tyrion (49 Chapters), Jon (42 Chapters), Arya (34 Chapters), and Dany (31 chapters) and I doubt that was the point they were making.
Either way It's obvious that Bran is being setup to have an extremely important role in the upcoming books. Having a four chapter difference between Catelyn/Sansa doesn't really mean much, especially when their POVs are often used as a camera to let us know the actions of non-POV characters. There's a big difference in the actual story content and narrative importance between the characters. This fandom also has a bad habit with reducing and inflating character's importance based on their opinions, so it doesn't surprise me that people dislike the idea of Key Five characters when their fave isn't a part of it.

The original draft holds very little value today. The Key Five are no longer the main focus but multiple characters now. Certain aspects in the outline were very vague or changed to add more to the characters or story.
For example, the Jon-Arya-Tyrion love triangle was completely removed to making Jon and Arya having a strong platonic relationship while Arya and Tyrion don't know each other.
The Key Five still do hold value in the books but with other pov characters like Sansa, Brienne, and Catelyn, just by focusing on the original Five and their chapters will make it harder to understand the story as a whole.
Arya is one of the key five along with Dany and Jon. Do you know who are the other 2? Tyrion and a ginger Stark...with blue eyes and Tully blood who goes by the name offfff ssssssBRAN lololol.

Simply going off a few scenes this season, i think D&D are doing a key-five, but they are different from Martin’s. Martin’s key five are: Jon, Dany, Tyrion, Arya, and Bran. I feel like D&D switched Bran out for Sansa which is...weird. They just focus on the other five so much more than Bran that it kinda feels like they switched them.
I could, of course, be wrong.
