It was a whim, to begin with. To get out of theĀ ādaily grindā to go somewhere quiet. Just the three of them.Ā
The first thing to do was pile all into the car, which was easier than anticipated, even if it was much too early for two thirds of the trio. Usually, a good old fashioned roadtrip was a trip to the beach. The beach held too many memories, or memories just waiting to be ignited. Neil and his mother, Andrew and everything about California (Why was it California was associated with beaches anyways? It had so much more to offer, it was so much more than a coastline state)
A lake was where they decided, quiet and with the perfect amount of solitude to ease their hidden anxieties. It was more relaxing than it had any right to be.
Through littering was how they found out about the nearby summer carnival, set up for only a day or two more. There wasnāt any reason not to at least check it out. Kevin balked at the dietary options but even he couldnāt deny trying something at Andrewās insistence (read: His unwavering blank stare). If Kevin got his revenge by getting Andrew on the ferris wheel, well that was nobodies business but their own.
All in all, it was a vacation well worth the days before that brought it along. The hidden cabin near the lake, the mountain of prizes they won when their competitive streaks were the flame that kept them on their feet. The soft blankets and even softer sweaters with the cool night air drifting in with the song of night creatures.
