Japanese Hairstyles: Historical Overview Part 02: Women’s Hairstyles of the Edo Period, Part 03
Hairstyle Name: Kawari Katsuyama (変わり勝山) lit. “Altered Victory Mountain” OR Mittsuami Katsuyama (三つ編み勝山) lit. “Braided Victory Mountain”
This hairstyle is a modern variation on the original Katsuyama hairstyle. This version of the Katsuyama creates the topknot ponytail as normal, then braids the hair and brings the braid forward, creating a high ornamental loop of hair. It may have been possible during the Meiji period, with the influence of Western sokuhatsu (束髪) type hairstyles, that such a variation may have already existed!
