The tawny owl used to be called nattuggla in Swedish, which means “night-owl” and is a reasonable thing to call this bird. Today, however, it’s inexplicably known as kattuggla, or “cat-owl” instead. Since the old and the new name sound so similar, I’m convinced it started as a pun.
