Kankuro is convinced that he will marry a Konoha shinobi, like his sister, like his brother.

He had to ask the question eventually, TenTen realized that.It was the nature of all healthy relationships to move forward and if she saidyes this would be the next logical step forward. She’d thought that by the timehe asked she would be ready and yet here the moment was and all she could dowas stare at him helplessly.

“TenTen?” Kankuro ventured. “You haven’t said anything for areally long time. Uh, you did hear my question right?”

“Mhm.” She nodded slowly, unable to look him in the eye.

“Okay. I get it, you just need a minute to think. That’s cool!”

He was being so kind about it, just like he was witheverything else, and she could barely stand it. At times TenTen wondered whatshe had ever done in this life or another to deserve someone as kind asKankuro. Others she wondered what it was about herself that kept him comingback to her.

The silence stretched for so long until finally it wasobvious that she wasn’t just taking the time to think, but instead but tryingto come up with words to say that would cause him as little pain as possible.Kankuro seemed to realize what her answer was even before she found a way tosay it. Unexpectedly, he smiled at her.

“Come on now, sweet buns, turn that frown upside down. Youdon’t have to say yes.”

“I’m sorry!” TenTen finally broke, leaning in to his sidewith dampening eyes. “I feel so bad!”

“Don’t! It’s a big step and yeah it’s probably scary tothink about.”

“Konoha is my home. I’ve never even thought about leaving.Living in Suna sounds like it would be wonderful but I just don’t know if I canleave here.”

To her surprise, instead of looking disappointed, Kankuroonly smiled and shrugged.

“Okay.” When TenTen looked at him with shock plain on herface he chuckled. “What? It was a big question and you saying yes was always along shot. Just to clarify though, is it the move to Suna that scares you or isthe idea living with me that bad as well?”

“No, no, no! Of course not! I miss you every time you haveto go back. Coming home to you every day would be like a dream come true. It’sjust…”

“Well, what if I moved here then?”

“Wha–! You would do that?” TenTen stared at her boyfriend,jaw hanging open in shock.

Kankuro press a chaste kiss to her cheek. “Hey, if my sistercan do it then so can I. I just want you to be happy, sweet buns.”

Fighting back the tears that were trying hard to escape downher cheeks, TenTen curled farther in to her boyfriend’s side and mumblednonsensically under her breath. Although Kankuro could really only make outperhaps one word in every four, he still got the gist of the gratitude she wastrying to express.

“So,” he said after a while. “I take it that’s a yes to memoving in with you?”

“A very happy yes,” she agreed quietly.
