The Great South Gate in Kaesong
Date of construction: The original gate tower was built in the early period of the Koryo Dynasty (1393) and has retained its present form.
Location: Puyong-dong, Kaesong City.
Dimensions: The structure consists of four bays lengthwise and three crosswise.
The Great South Gate, facing directly south, stands on the old inner fortress wall of Panwol. Its substructure features an arched stone gateway, above which the gate tower rises, covered with a saddle-shaped roof.
The substructure and the gate tower are well-proportioned and harmonious. The entire structure conveys a solid, fortress-like impression and possesses a distinctive architectural charm.
The three-tiered inner and outer brackets are simple in form, their surfaces showing the marks of age. The interior is undecorated, and the ceiling is supported by beams shaped like “camel humps.”
The Great South Gate of Kaesong exemplifies the characteristic features of gate architecture from the early Koryo Dynasty.
