A Bouquet For Spring, a Fifties Hat This small hat in dark rosy velvet is part of the Kansas State University costume collection that I was shown by Marla Day, curator of the collection. Small hats need to be held on somehow, and you can see in the top photo the two small combs on either side of the hat that would be turned and pushed into the hair. There were a great variety of small hats in the 1950s, some held on with combs, and others edged with wire so they could grip on each side of the head with pressure This one has a small, but lush bouquet of roses and violets including their long green stems. A cheerful way to greet spring. It may have been worn with a suit or with an afternoon dress. Either way, worn for a social event rather than something serious like office work. Unless you were a pretty playful worker.

The average non-Kansan Supernatural fan likely knows that Sam and Dean are from Lawrence, and may make the uneducated judgement that, by virtue of being in the same town as the University of Kansas, they are both unquestionably Jayhawks. As someone raised in Kansas, however, I posit that THIS is the correct interpretation of their sportsball preferences:
Sam: All I’m saying is that basketball and football are two different sports. KU is good at basketball, I root for them during basketball. K-State is good at football, I cheer for them during football.
Dean: It’s a matter of loyalty, Sammy!
Sam: Loyalty to what? A college that neither of us attended?!?
Dean: Our roots, Sam! My god, man, we’re from Lawrence! You’re a Jayhawk forever, whether you like it or not! When did you get all EMAW* on me?
Sam: I’m not- I just like their football, Dean. Why does it matter so much? You hardly ever watch either.
Dean: It’s the principle of the thing, man. A true sports fan is loyal to his team, even when they’re not doing so hot.
Sam: This is so stupid. I hate you.
