I need to talk about Ronin's eyes. They are one of my favorite details about his character development in relation to Hylen.

They start off as very intense and intimidating to Hylen.

"His gaze locked onto a pair of warm brown eyes that seemed to pierce his soul with a force of intense curiosity."

"He felt like prey being watched by a hunter, as if any move could be his last. Hylen wrapped his cloak tighter, knowing it was a completely useless action in the face of such prying eyes."

On the other side of that interaction was Ronin seeing somebody who definitely doesn't belong here and looks a lot like what they knew to be the signs of a Blessed of Strength. They are an intensely curious and somewhat impulsive individual, so they took their chances.

So when they start getting to know each other, not only does Ronin become a bit more mellow, they become defensive of Hylen instead of curious. So now they're gaze is gentle and, for the most part, concerned. Which makes his eyes softer in appearance.

This paired with Hylen's eyes slowly becoming dull and full of fear...

they bond first through silence. annabeth has never gotten silence before. with thalia and luke, they’d always been too busy with each other. with percy, it was like standing in the middle of the storm.

but calypso? with her gentle touches and soft healing hymns, annabeth found herself at peace, shoulders relaxing for the first time in forever, and grey eyes settling into a calm.

calypso loved annabeth’s eyes. they had that intelligent glint to them, something she’s never really seen in a hero before... it was beautiful. soft, but dangerous. breathtaking

they kissed 2 nights before hepheastus appeared to tell annabeth what had happened, and the choice of whether or not she’ll come back

annabeth would - for once - experience what it would be like to be the one leaving. but she doesn’t leave without a promise: she’d find ogygia again. she didn’t care what it took, she was athena’s daughter and she will do the impossible.
