"Because I'm the monster that parents tell their children about at night?"
Norsery Rhymes, Northern Mythology from A to Z Bolverkr - (Disguised Odin), The Worker of Evil Deeds Well here we are another Thorās Day and another 20 min sketch of a Norse (and Germanic, sometimes Celtic) mythological characters. This week itās Bolverkr. Odin in disguise. Whose name literally meaning 'The Bale-Worker'. Itās connotation in this case means not only that but also; āThe Evil Workerā, or āEvil Deedsā, or āThe Worker of Terrible deedsā, or āThe Evil doer, or āThe Malefactorā.
Buckle in this ones a long one, so get ready for some fun over-simplification ;)
Odin in his never ending search for knowledge discovers the Mead of the Skalds. The Precious mead, the great Mead of Inspiration and Poetry. Made by the evil Dwarves (Dvergrs) Gajarr and Fjalarr, out of honey and rum mixed with Kvasirās Blood, with incantations said over it while brewing.Ā It would provide great knowledge, inspiration, fine words, poetry and song to whoever drank it.Ā Causing those who hear your words and song to be moved as you intend.Ā And without a hangover to boot. Odin hears about all of this while inquiring in several places where Kvasir, whose absence has been felt in Asgard has disappeared too.Ā He hears it from those he inquires to as well as his Ravens Hunin and Munin, who come to him with the news of the specific murder of not only Kvasir, but the Kind Jotun Gillingr and his wife at their home. With this he goes to his Uncle Mimir at his well of knowledge to find out the rest of the hidden details.Ā
The Dvergr paid the Mead to the Giant (Jotun) Suttungr the son of Gillingr, as a repayment for killing his parents. He initially intended to kill them, but he took it as they claimed the deaths were accidents, and the mead wold make his life better. Keeping it at his castle Hnitbjorg, the Lock Rock, that was carved out of a mountain on the border of Jotunheim. Guarded in his treasure chambers by Suttungrs beautiful and gentle daughter Gunnlod, that he had turned into, or perhaps glamored, into an evil looking Hag until he could finish the mead.Ā Ā
Odin on learning of this last detail called an official meeting of the Aesir to determine what to do. Given what the mead represented to the Aesir, a greater understanding and a genesis of poetry, as well as what Suttungr had done to guard it, it was determined that Odin would go in disguise to win the mead.
He disguised himself as a labourer, with a scythe, auger, and whetstone.Ā A man capable of working field and stone. On his arrival at Suttungrs brother Baugiās farm he stopped to talk to the 9 thralls working the field. They told him Baugi was a fair man to them, and he valued his fields cu quickly. He offered to sharpen their scythes with his whetstone, it being magic.Ā It made their scythes better than new, and sharper than anything. They all attempted to buy it from them. Revealing that they were each in turn evil men who had avoided payments, stolen, killed, and helped burn out other farms for Baugi. Odin claimed that they should decide who would pay and threw it on the ground in front of them. At which point they all intentionally or accidentally or both ended up cutting off each of their heads with their sharpened blades.
Odin waited until nightfall and introduced himself to Baugi, who was annoyed his thralls hadnāt finished with the hay before killing each other. And where would he find more followers that would be both mowers of field and mowers of men as heād killed or driven everyone else around away. Odin as Bolverkr told him he was good with fields and dark deeds and he could finish his fields faster than his nine, or not pay him. Baugi said he could name his price if he could do that. Odin said heād heard his brother had the best mead around and wanted a taste of that. Baugi was surprised, and didnāt have access to it, but he agreed to help Bolverkr steal a sip of it, through persuasion or deed.
Odin had everything harvested, stacked, gathered, threshed, culled, and stored in no time.Ā Everything ready for the next spring. With that Baugi was impressed and agreed to take Bolverkr to his brother.Ā Ā
Suttungr sounded impressed but unmoved by the feat and since the deal was not his he would not honour it. Baugi and Odin discussed how they could get the mead. As they knew where the treasure vault was from the outside of the mountain by the singing of Gunnlod, they went to that spot where Odin showed Baugi his Auger āRatiā. It was tiny as it came out of his pocket, but Odin told him it would grow larger and as long as needed to dig any hole through stone with little effort. Baugi now doubted Bolverkr was who he said, and intended to trap him in the hole. Instead of a large hole he bore a tiny one after much exertion and asked if Bolverkr could fit in it. Odin knowing that the hole could have been any size with less effort blew into the hole. It did not blow clean through, and Odin confronted him about it, knowing Baugi would betray him. Bolverkr stated he had worked the field in good faith. Baugi then resumed his effort and felt the stone become harder to drill as he reached closer to the treasure rooms magically warded walls. Once through Odin checked again, but the air blew through the hole to the other side.Ā Odin immediately turned into a snake and was through before Baugi could tell. Baugi tried to plug the hole with the auger but was too late.Ā Baugi certain there would be trouble ran off home.
Odin once in, he transformed himself into a handsome young Jotun.Ā In looking around he saw that while the palace was endless luxury and marvel, the treasure room was just a cave. Not fit for a girl to live in.
When Gunnlod saw Odin she was expecting thieves and asked him him he came for the mead.Ā Odin lied and said he came for her. Showing her affection. She was excited that the spell might have been broken and welcomed him to a night together. In the morning he said he was thirsty and she brought him the first vat of mead āOdroerirā. He drank it down. But instead of leaving as she had expected once he had a taste of the mead, he welcomed her back to bed for another night.Ā The next morning she brought him the vat āBodnā, and the morning after that the last one āSonā.Ā With that she begged him to stay forever, but he claimed her blue eyes reminded him of the sky and he needed to see it.Ā She opened a hidden high up window. Odin changed into an eagle and flew off, sending her an affectionate look back.Ā He had all the mead in his throat.
On his leaving Gunnlod screamed for him to come back, alerting the castle. Suttungr had his own giant black eagle transforming cloak āOrne-Hamā, and took off after Odin. The chase was long, with Heimdall alerting the Aesir long before Odin was visible.Ā They place three large golden cauldrons for the mead, but as Odin delivered it some spilled into a pool outside Asgard's walls, the āFools Portionā, āskald-fiflahlutrā that anyone can drink. Suttungr was too slow and was caught by the rising sun turning him to stone.
That night the Aesir each had a drink so that they could each be wiser. They then parceled out some to deliver to Midgard so that there might be poetry there as well.
The mead was very shortly stolen from Asgard, and returned by a disguise using Odin before it would finally stay permanently in Asgard.Ā
I guess even in Norse mythology there were sequels.Ā
If youāre looking for a more traditional looking disguised wandering Odin with his wide hat and staff, Iāve done a couple of those as well:

Monster Loki Ć Pregnant Reader
Summary: Summary: Youāre pregnant. Yay! Everyone seems to care accept for the father of your child. Loki is distant and all you can do is wonder why. It's not everyday that you get Pregant, not to mention with a frost giant. Giving birth earlier than human, you have to deal with a frost giant pregnancy. Their are some benefits like the strength but the damage your child is doing to your body makes you ask yourself..."Is it worth it?"
Warning: Angst, Fluff, swearing
Pt: 1/4
--------
Sleeping wasn't what your little one wanted you to do. It kept you awake all night, kicking and punching your bladder and the occasional rolling into your ribs.
With a sigh you got up quietly trying not to wake Loki. He was sound asleep and held onto your swollen stomach as the kicking ceased to end. "Are you happy now?" You ask the child growing inside you. "I'm up I'm up."
You needed to pee for the fifth time that night. Afterwards, you couldn't help but look in the mirror. Fingertips glided across your abdomen and the child kicked you again making you jump. On earth, people would think you were already nine months but the truth is, you were only one.
Frost giant babies are born at the end of the season. So you had two months left and you couldn't help but be so happy to get the child out of you.
Looking up, you see Loki's eyes staring at you from behind. Turning your body you see his face is hard as he sits up showing his naked torso.
"Why aren't you asleep, y/n?" He asks "Come to bed." Said Loki, not even giving you the chance to answer.
"Your son." You chuckle walking over to the bed. "He's keeping me awake with all of his moving around. He also seems to think my bladder is some sort of toy."
With a sigh Loki tilts his head, "You don't even know if it's a boy or a girl. It doesn't work like that you know. They change genders based on your body temperature."
Shrugging you slide onto the bed, kissing his knuckles as your head layed on his chest. "I know it's going to be a boy, Loki." You say "And if it's not who the hell cares."
He kissed your head and you sat up so you faced him. "My lovely y/n, your optimism is so refreshing." He says as you kiss his pale jaw. "Not right now." Said Loki in a low voice.
You didn't take it seriously and shrugged it off due to his head tilting back a bit. You were straddling his waist as your tongue entered his mouth, licking the roof of it. He wiggled at your touch and Loki's hand rose to your face cupping it gently.
He tried to push you back, but your fingernails dug into his arms holding Loki's body in place. Hands roaming his jet black hair, your face heated up as you tasted the inside of Loki's mouth. He kept trying to pull you off, but you didn't budge. It was sort of strange for him and you.
Loki was the strong one and when it came to sex or just making out, he would always worry about hurting you. Of course their were times that he left bruises.
Some on your thigh on how tight he held it when his body slammed into you, others on your arms when Loki would hold you down hearing you moan his name aimlessly.
You didn't mind them despite the face he would make when he saw them. But right now, you were the one bruising him. And maybe it was due to your pregnancy and if it was, you didn't care. You were in control of Loki's movements and that was what was driving him crazy.
Your tounge slid from out of his mouth as he pulled back. Biting your lips, you slowly grind on his boxers. Loki, flustered rubbed his eyes trying not to look at your begging grin. Foreheads touching he gave you a serious expression, "Not now." Said Loki as he slid your legs from off his lap.
"Fine." You say standing abruptly and grabbing your cloak that hung on the hook. With a sigh you shrugged and rolled your eyes. "I absolutely hate you." You mumble exiting the room.
Your child kicked you again as you walked down the hall. No sleep tonight and that was something you were still getting used too. Heading for the library, you decided to read a book. They always kept you awake and when you read them out loud, the moving of your child ceased as if he was listening.
-----------------------------------------------
Archery. Since you had been living in Asgard, the sport had grown on you. Every other morning, you'd go out and shoot a couple at the target. For some reason, it took away some of your early morning nausea being out doors.
This was the one morning where you weren't by yourself. Frigga had made her way towards you with a warm smile and a tray of food. "Good morning, y/n." She greeted
"Morning." You said back, grabbing another arrow.
"You slept well I presume?" Asks Frigga, as you release the arrow towards the target.
Fixing your cloak, your body turns towards her and you reply, "Unfortunately not. He's been keeping me awake with his moving around so I decided to read at the library." You told her picking up one of the grapes. "I came across some names and I've chosen a few."
"Oh? That's exciting, y/n. Have you discussed them with my son, Loki?" Asks Frigga watching you put the bow down and eat more of the grapes
"We um...we haven't had the...their just isn't a good time. Loki is busy and so am I."
"I think you should go to the infirmary to get checked out." Frigga suggests looking you up and down. "A pregnant woman with barely any sleep can't be healthy. For you or your baby."
"Oh Frigga," you chuckle trying to shrug it off. "I'm fine, really. The naps I do take are the perfect amount of sleep I need." You lied. Honestly, your body was very tired. Even when you did close your eyes it was only for 20 minutes then he'd kick you awake.
"Oh darling, are you sure?" She asked you as you eat some more of the fruit. "I want a happy mother and also healthy one. I'm sure my son Loki would too."
"Well...maybe a little check up won't hurt." You gave in with a sigh while picking up your bow again and some arrows. "But please, could you have them not call me Lady y/n. It's to formal and if Thor can stop so can they."
Frigga lets out a heart laugh and puts her hand on your shoulder. "Oh darling." She says in between laughs. "I will be sure to tell them so."
"Thank you Frigga." You said shooting the arrow as she left.
------------------
A couple weeks had past, and it wasn't the sleep that was bugging you now. You seemed to get bigger and walking was getting a bit harder. You did manage to get to and from the kitchen for snacks in the night despite Frigga's protests.
The sleepless nights ceased ever since you went to the infirmary. They gave you pills that helped you sleep through the constant moving that happened inside you.
You also noticed how you'd wake up thinking Loki was there lying next to you just to wake up in the morning with his side of the bed looking untouched.
Their wasn't even a wrinkle in the sheets that proved otherwise. Just like this morning. Instead of hearing his sweet words whispering in your ear, "Good morning my heavenly mortal." You were gifted with the sunlight beaming in your face and your ear uncharmed by the tickle of his breath against it.
Having to repeat that daily made you question why? And the fact that your body had not been touched by his hands in so long, made you flinch in question when you tried to pleasure yourself.
"Y/N?" Asks Thor as you walk down the corridor towards the kitchen "Y/N, where are you going?"
"I'm hungry. And I could really go for a cream cheese and Jelly sandwich. Maybe two and I have a strong craving for Fish and Mushroom soup." You answer continuing to walk.
"My mother wants you to rest." Thor said, but more in a warning way. "A child carrier should not be on her feet." Then he looks down "Whoa! Your ankles are bigger than my hammer." He laughed "It's a dinner table for all the gods to eat on."
Without thinking or hesitation, your hand came flying across his face swiftly. You didn't expect him to be phased by it or even move but he did the exact opposite. Thor fell to the ground and holding his cheek.
