jon cooper on macklin celebrini’s penalty shot
jon cooper went out of his way to praise macklin’s maturity, saying he can’t think of mack as a kid because of how well he plays and handles himself, and then there’s macklin. out there giggling and beaming in every photo and video, talking about how his banana bread recipe is his mother’s and even his inherent neat freak is a credit to his mother too, looking like he can barely contain his excitement whenever he’s asked about his teammates in interviews, describing his game as joy. saying this is a dream come true.
mack may be exceptionally mature for his age and handling all the pressure so well, and he is absolutely a consummate professional who you know is taking his responsibility on this team very seriously, but it still makes me emotional at how much more he seems able to be that kid he’s not really allowed to when he’s on the ice for the sharks. with the sharks, all the weight is on his shoulders. if he doesn’t carry the team, they sink. everyone knows that well.
on this team, he’s been given an extreme opportunity and role in being able to play on that first line and produce with mcdavid, but he also knows he doesn’t have to do it alone. he’s on the ice with two of the best players in the world. the best defenseman in the world. and everyone’s favorite all-around hockey player of the past two decades. it’s not all on mack, and thanks to that, he gets to be a little giddier in interviews and soak up all that skill around him when he’s at the rink. and i couldn’t be happier for him. he deserves this so much.
