Lots of rusty brass, dirt and old copper contrasted with Walt’s bright and shiny one-man creation branded with @davesmithartist’s elegant calligraphy. It’s one of those tracks that pretty much paints the entire picture for you. JM is able to conjure up imagery in the fewest words like no one else. ⠀ For this segment I had to flip between the songwriting scenes and the song visuals. I liked the idea of intercutting between tight shots of the typewriter to shots of other machinery to help tie the two. ⠀ ⠀ 🎞✂️ I had to composite most of those letters individually onto the typewriter keys to spell out WALT GRACE (I originally only had the A, C and E to work with) I wanted to have the typing in sync to the clunks you hear the song to introduce the segment. ⠀ The wooden ‘Walt Grace’s Submarine’ sign (0:55) was originally a Jim Beam barrel from a commercial. ⠀ The fans out there might recognise (at 0:52) the cover for JM’s live album ‘As/Is’ 🌊🐇 by artist @kozyndan (his work for the whole cover series is superb) An obvious inclusion to build on the Japanese motif. There’s also one more Easter Egg in that shot for those looking. ⠀ I still think this song deserved an official music video, something a little haunting and claustrophobic at the start that soon opens up to be vastly cinematic. Just my interpretation.
