Cruz Lines “I enjoy researching, my interest in art history can fuel new experiments allowing the work to develop. I am constantly on the lookout and sort through lots of material to find something that appeals to me.” - Joe Cruz, Visual Artist. 29-year-old Joe Cruz is rewriting, or rather, repainting our cultural history with his chalky scribbles and pastel mark-making. Cruz is a visual artist, he graduated from 'Norwich School of Art’ in 2010 - his work spans art, design, fashion and graphics. Cruz was born in London in 1988. He has a multi-cultural background, with grandparents hailing from France, Spain, Austria and England. Cruz grew up in North London and has worked with brands including ‘Stussy’, ‘Penguin Books’ and ‘Reggie London’. Cruz applies his playful, colourful touch to vintage fashion editorials, jazz records sleeves and archive photography. His work is easily recognisable by his expressive marks in vibrant, tropical colours. Cruz uses expressive lines, strong colours and graphical imagery. This is partly due to his fascination with bold simple statements, as seen in political posters and advertising slogans. Simple and subversive messages play a key role in his work. Cruz loves working with found imagery, juxtaposing it with bold colourful and strong marks to give the work a contemporary context. Cruz’s extensive use of found imagery adds to the freshness of his work as he takes an already existing object and re-appropriates it in a stark and accessible way. Finding these photographs has become a part of the illustrator’s process, forgotten photos are given another chance to shine with twists of crayon and pops of zesty colour adorning their surface. The freelance artist, illustrator and textile designer has a brilliant eye for remixing found objects with glorious flashes of colour. So simple and yet so brilliant. #chapeaulondon #chapeaublog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #wordsandpictures #amazing #london #lifestyle #joecruz #visualartist #colour #lines #vintage #photography #posters #art #artist #illustrator #textiledesigner
