It’s 8pm in NYC and I’ve been listening to 2AM in LA on repeat all day. After a week of teaser lyric sheets released on social media, Jake Miller did not fail to live up to the hype of his official album debut. 2AM in LA is full of raw emotion on a scale very different from his previous EPs, showing his growth not only as an artist but as a person as well. No one can deny that Jake is one of the most personable and down to Earth artists in the industry today, but should any doubt remain somewhere, this album would correct it.
Miller’s album explores the relatable topic of the ups and downs of love and the end of a relationship. The placement of the tracks act in the perfect timeline of one’s thoughts at 2 in the morning through a tough time in anyone’s life. Can’t Help Myself discusses the feeling of still wanting the other person, even though you know it’s better not to, because it’s familiar and addictive. He moves through the stages of not wanting anything less than all of the person, the pain of seeing them with someone else and the avoiding it through avoiding social engagements; and the act of looking for them in rebounds or one night stands. Then the album climaxes at the point of realizing when it all changed, in the relationship and himself, and accepting that there’s a reason even if he doesn’t know why. Finally rounding it out with the realizations of his own faults in it all and coming together for that one last time before understanding it’s healthier to love from a distance. And even then, knowing it’s okay to still want to go back to the start of it all, before everything changed.
2AM in LA is a perfect and beautiful depiction of the post breakup thought process, that I recommend. Whether you’ve experienced it first hand or not, by the end of the album, you’ll feel as though you have. It’s debut at #1 on iTunes is more than well deserved.
