Plans You Had For Us. 446 words. Gen. ao3
It was the middle of the night and the hospital was quiet. Somehow the calmness of it made Joe even more nervous. Chloe had laughed at the irony. He was used to running into burning buildings and doing all sorts of risky things to rescue people. He’d almost drowned not that long ago during a rescue dive. And yet this was stressing him out.
Hermann had warned him of that. When doing their job, all they think about is what they do, and getting through as fast and as safely as possible. Adrenaline runs through their veins and there is no time for doubt or fear. It is quick and familiar, nothing like the birth of a child. In fact, it might be the opposite.
There was no action here, it was all waiting, as patiently as they could, and when he heard his wife’s screams of pain, there was very little he could do besides reminding her he was there and he loved her. Joe felt powerless and what people had described as a beautiful miracle currently didn’t seem like it to him, or Chloe.
“I wish our son would come out already so this pain would stop,” Chloe said after a particularly painful contraction.
“I know. I can’t wait to meet him either,” Joe sat next to her on the bed and wrapped her in his arms, rubbing her shoulder to try to comfort her. “Do you remember that date early in our relationship? That night you kissed me and I thought I might melt?”
“Of course. It started raining and you were sad because it ruined the plans you had for us that evening. I told you it didn’t matter, that we could find something else to do, that as long as we were together, we’d have a great time. And then I kissed you.”
“You did, and I thought ‘wow this woman is perfect, I can’t believe she’s with me’. Then we went to that fancy restaurant-”
“And everyone looked at us funny because we were soaking wet.”
“And I bought you that bouquet of roses so the owners would stop giving us the stink eye and thinking we couldn’t actually afford the place, were just trying to escape the rain and would dine and dash.”
They shared a smile and, for an instant, they were both back there, happy and excited for a new beginning. Then, another contraction came in, Chloe winced in pain and they were brought back to the present, where they also felt excited for a new beginning in their life. They’d gone full circle and nothing could bring them more joy than taking that next step together.
