Was thrilled to be commissioned by J.D. Dillard to draw the heroes of his fantastic films, Sweetheart and Sleight. I had a blast borrowing them for a short while, and was a fun collaboration effort!
Lucasfilm is developing a new “Star Wars” feature film with “Sleight” writer-director J.D. Dillard and “Luke Cage” writer Matt Owens.
The project is still in its very early stages, and all further details — characters, location, time period within the “Star Wars” creative galaxy — remain a mystery. That includes whether Dillard would direct the film, or whether the project would premiere in theaters or on Disney Plus.
Dillard made waves with 2016's Sleight, a genre thriller that was well-received when it debuted at Sundance and subsequently picked up by Focus. His last movie was Sweetheart, a horror thriller that starred Kiersey Clemons, and he recently helmed an episode of Utopia, the Gillian Flynn-created series set up at Amazon.
Sweetheart is a decent monster movie where a young woman finds herself washed up on an island and learns that sharks aren’t the only apex predators around here. The monster design is actually pretty cool and there’s a decent buildup before you see it in full glory. I almost gave it 2.5 stars because Emory Cohen’s acting was pretty iffy before I opted to give it a 3/5 by the last 20 minutes.

Sleight (2016) dir. J.D. Dillard
The indie superhero movie Sleight hits theaters nationwide on Friday, April 28. First-time director J.D. Dillard presented Sleight at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, where it competed in the NEXT category for bold, pure works with an innovative and forward-thinking approach to storytelling.
After a young street magician is left to care for his little sister following their mother's passing, he turns to dealing drugs, but he quickly runs into trouble with his supplier. When his sister gets kidnapped, he must rely on his smarts and sleight of hand to save her.

In terms of my own interests and how I want to contribute to the diversity conversation, at this stage it’s not necessarily with slave movies and civil rights–adjacent stories. I come from the genre space. That’s what I love. I do want to tell stories that center on women and/or people of color. I would love to give a young Asian woman a role that otherwise could have just gone to some white dude. To me, that’s the beauty of genre. You get to sugarcoat things. Just by having, ‘Look, it takes place on a spaceship,’ people will be like, ‘I’ll go see that, even though there are black people in it.’
