if your teenage son has to explain to you that the fit, grumpy bloke who keeps you in good coffee and thick-cut bacon just asked you out, you probably need to take a good, hard look at yourself aka the gilmore girls au you didnât know you wanted
:::
Robertâs dying. Thereâs no other explanation. Head pounding, vision blurred, limbs heavy; he can feel himself weakening with every step.
This is so unfair. There were so many things he wanted to do, so many things he never got chance to say. He was fine when he left the house, he canât believe this is how itâs going to end for him. The only silver lining is that at least heâll get to see Aaron one last time.
Somehow, and he really has no idea how, he makes it through the door. Manages to collapse into a stool, drapes himself dramatically across the counter, and closes his eyes to wait for death.
Thereâs a cough.
Robert prises open an eye. Thereâs an arm, soft orange plaid rolled at the elbow, forearm corded with muscle, a dusting of dark hair. Itâs a perfect arm, Robert likes it very much. Especially when it plonks a cup of steaming coffee right under his nose.
âDrink that and stop whimpering,â the arm says. âYouâre scaring all my customers.â
The arm is rude, so Robert ignores it in favour of burying his face in his cup until he comes back from the brink.
When heâs finished he holds his it out for more, musters up a sunny smile.
Aaron eyes him with disdain. âYouâre an idiot,â he says, like he does every day.
Robert flashes his teeth. âBut Iâm your idiot,â he says, like he does every day.
Heâs not, obviously, but he likes the way it makes Aaron go pink.
Aaron puts his cup back down in front of him, full again, and hurries off to take someone their breakfast. Robert puts his elbows on the counter, cradles his cup under his nose and breathes. Thatâs better.
âNo Seb today?â Aaron asks, coming back just in time to slap Robert away from the dome of muffins on the counter.
Robert rubs his smarting knuckles. âRevising, not long til exams, is it?â
Aaron leans to fold his arms on his side of the counter, it puts his face close enough to Robertâs that he can smell him; rich coffee and bacon fat. Robert lets his mouth water.
âYeah he was in here last night, books all over the place, taking up my best table.â
Robert glances over his shoulder to the table in the window, with its bench seat and plump cushions, sunlight falling across it in disjointed rectangles. âYou should have told him to bugger off,â he says. âDid he even buy anything?â
Aaron shrugs. âHe looked busy, it was fine.â
Aaron always gets sort of misty-eyed whenever they talk about Seb. Ever since Robert fled to the village when Seb was barely walking and Aaron was just a kid. Back when he thought Robert, seventeen and carting a baby round on his hip, was worthy of hero worship. Aaron, gruff and grumbling at the best of times, has doted on Seb, like the rest of village, for as long as Robert can remember, and Robertâs always poked fun at him for it.
âYouâve gone soft,â Robert tells him, sipping at his coffee.
That gets him a glare. âDo you want the bacon sarnie Iâm about to put on for you or not?â
âYes please.â
âThen shut your mouth, you talk too much.â
Robert mimes zipping his lips closed, goes back to his coffee while Aaron does his actual job.
The butty Aaron brings him is dripping with butter and brown sauce, bacon still bubbling. Itâs a work of art.
âGod,â Robert says vaguely, gazing at his sandwich, âSometimes, I could actually kiss you.â
Aaron pauses where heâs making someone a drink, sugar skittering across the counter top. He coughs, sweeping it off the edge into his cupped hand and his voice, when he speaks, is frayed around the edges. âItâs just a butty.â
Robert eyes him while he takes a bite. Thereâs always been something addictive about flirting with Aaron, maybe because Aaron never seems to know what to do with him. Lately, Robertâs been wondering if there might be more to it, but heâd be risking a lot to ask, maybe too much. And the likes the gentle hum in the air between them as it is. Seeing Aaron in the mornings is a treat, something to file away to keep himself going.
Maybe thatâs enough.
:::
âI wonder what this is about,â Seb says, jogging a little to catch Robert up.
They crunch up the drive together. Robert still isnât used to it being light out at this time of night, barely any chill in the air. Summer seems to come earlier every year.
Jesus, heâs starting to sound like his dad.
Robert shudders, passes it off as a shrug. âNo idea. When did we last even have a village meeting?â
âAfter the daffodil incident,â Seb reminds him, and they both a take a second to appreciate the fact that Robert never got caught for that.
âMaybe itâs an Easter thing then?â Robert suggests. âHey, maybe Pollard wants you to wear the bonnet again.â
Seb bristles. âHe can do one. Anyway, Iâve already told him how upset Isaac was to be left out last year, so I think Iâm in the clear.â
Robert has to laugh. âYou realise Isaacâs going to murder you?â
Isaacâs twice Sebâs size, all shoulders and hair to Sebâs coltish limbs and freckles. If Isaac didnât swallow his tongue every time Seb so much as glanced his way, Robert would worry. As it is, heâs pretty sure Isaac would wear the bonnet without fuss, if Seb asked him nicely enough.
Not that thereâs any need to tell Seb that.
The village hall is bustling with people but they manage to snag a pair of seats near the back. Robert catches a glimpse of Aaron on the other side of the room, mussed up hair and the dark of his beard. Heâs got his arms folded and a tea towel over his shoulder, obviously wanting to get back to work. Robert stares at the back of his neck, pale and vulnerable above his collar, until he starts to feel weird about it.
Pollard waits until everyoneâs seated, before he hops up on the stage. âGood evening, everyone,â he says. âI know itâs unusual to call a village meeting at such short notice but-â
âMate,â Aaron calls out. âCan you just get on with it? Some of usâve got businesses to run.â
A murmur of agreement ripples through the room and Pollard puffs up like a blowfish, mouth opening again.
Robert slumps down in his seat and tips his head on to Sebâs bony shoulder to close his eyes. Heâs been awake too long for this.
âWake me up if anything exciting happens,â he says, already tuning out Pollardâs droning voice.
:::
He comes to, when Seb shrugs him awake, to an empty room, only a few last stragglers shuffling out.
âIs it over?â he asks, wiping at his mouth. Thereâs a patch of dribble on Sebâs shoulder that Robert hopes he wont notice.
Seb stands up, stretching his arms out. âItâs been over for a while. Aaron brought us food.â
Thereâs a bulging paper bag, rolled at top, and a takeaway cup on the seat beside Robert. Of course Aaron brought them food, Aaronâs perfect.
Oh god, what if Aaron saw all the dribble?
Robert grabs them both, sipping at the coffee as they start the short walk home. âDid I miss much?â
Seb shakes his head. âPlans for a new gazebo by the church, something about the playground, Rodney calling Eric a tiny dictator, the usual. Aaron said youâve been looking tired and not to tell you that thatâs decaf.â
Robert drops the cup heâs holding straight into the bin theyâre passing. âHeâs really got to stop doing that.â
Seb shrugs. âHe worries about you.â
âHe doesnât need to,â Robert says, even though it makes him feel soft inside, like a bruised peach, every time Aaron tries to take care of him. Robertâs been taking care of himself and Seb for so long, heâs always an arse about letting someone else take a turn.
âSo you didnât pull an all nighter at the B&B on Saturday?â Seb asks, eyebrow quirked.
Robert sighs. âYou donât need to worry about me either. There was a leak, someone had to sort it.â
âI know, you said.â
Robert slings an arm around his shoulders, feeling guilty, in spite of himself. Sebâs a good kid, the best. Maybe Robert has been leaving him to his own devices a little too much recently. Itâs hard, sometimes, to balance his new managerâs position against the fact that Seb does still need him, even if it isnât like it was when he was little. âWhat do you say to movie night tomorrow night then? Just you and me.â
Robert doesnât think anything will ever compare to the feeling he gets when Seb looks up at him with those big blue eyes, all lit up like that. He wishes he could bottle it, heâd make a fortune.
âBack to the Future marathon?â
Robert nods. âObviously.â
:::
Robertâs cup is already waiting for him on the counter the next morning, steaming away. Thereâs a chocolate muffin sat on a little square napkin next to it.
Aaronâs in the corner, taking an order, and Robert ignores him when he looks up, just to be an arse.
âYou canât eat my apology muffin, if youâre not going to forgive me,â Aaron says, going behind the counter to tap away at the till.
Robert shrugs, stuffing some more muffin into his face. âI think itâs the lack of trust between us now, that hurts the most-â
Aaron cuts him off. âOh fuck off. Tell me you didnât sleep better last night, tell me.â
âLike a baby,â Robert says, giving up the act. He canât even pretend to be mad at Aaron these days. âAnd thanks for the burger.â
There is it, that little flush in Aaronâs cheeks that makes Robertâs heart thump illicitly.
Aaron fidgets adorably for a minute. âYou didnât exactly look up to cooking. What with the pool of dribble and all.â
Robert absolutely does not go red himself, that would be pathetic. âYou know how restful I find village meetings.â
âDonât even get me started on that.â
âAs if I would.â Aaronâs disdain for village meetings is well known. Robertâs pretty sure itâs been a literal agenda item on at least two occasions.
Aaron starts wiping the counter down, even though itâs already sparkling. âSo, what are you up to this weekend?â
Itâs a weird question. Not the sort of polite small talk Aaron usually makes with him. Robertâs spidey sense tingles.
âFriday night tea up at the farm, you know the drill. Then nothing, actually. Nicola and Jimmy are on holiday.â
Aaron nods rapidly, like this is riveting stuff, and Robert turns his weird up to fucking bizarre.
âAre you alright?â Robert asks, because Aaronâs still nodding.
âFine, yeah,â thereâs a pause. âIâm going to a wedding on Friday,â Aaron says brightly, apropos of nothing.
âAre you? Whose?â The B&B is booked out all weekend but he hasnât heard anything about a local wedding.
âOld school mate,â Aaron says. âTheyâre having some big marquee do up at Home Farm, hell on earth probably. But I quite liked her at school and we sort of bumped into each other on a night out a few months ago, got to catching up. I got the impression someone had left them a couple of empty seats or something and I couldnât think of a way to get out of it.â
âRight,â Robert says warily. That might be the most words heâs ever heard Aaron use at once. He hopes heâs not winded.
Aaron looks vaguely embarrassed, like he knows exactly what Robertâs thinking. Heâs gone really red as well, hands tapping at the counter. âDonât suppose you fancy keeping me company? So I donât have to sit next to an empty chair all night?â
âOr take your mum,â Robert points out.
Aaron laughs loudly enough that an old woman at the end of the counter drops her fork. âYeah, exactly.â
Robert shrugs. He can think of worse ways to spend an evening than with Aaron. It getting him out of Friday night tea is the cherry on top really. âWhy not? Everyone keeps telling me Iâm due a day off work so, yeah, sounds like fun.â
âReally?â
âYeah, course. Iâll come with you.â
Aaron looks baffled, as though this wasnât his idea in the first place. âOkay,â he says. âGreat, thank you. Thatâs great.â
âItâll be fun,â Robert tells him, going back to his muffin, mentally sifting through his suits to find something that wont clash with whatever Aaron might wear.
Aaron hovers for a second, mouth open, but the bell dings in the kitchen hatch before he can say anything else.
:::
Sebâs on the settee when Robert gets home, feet up on the coffee table. Heâs barely more than a tuft of ginger hair and green socks, hidden behind the giant book heâs got his face buried in.
âGrandad rang,â he tells Robert, voice muffled.
Robert makes a face. Great. âYouâre going to have to go for tea by yourself on Friday,â he says breezily.
Seb appears from behind his book, visibly suspicious. âWhy?â
Robert busies himself putting the kettle on. âIâve got a thing.â
âWhat sort of thing?â
âJust a thing,â he doesnât actually know why heâs being so cagey until Seb speaks again.
âA date thing then. You canât swerve Grandadâs for a some woman. Or bloke. Heâll go mad.â
âItâs not a date.â
Sebâs eyes roll. God, sometimes he looks so much like his mother. âWhat then?â
âAaronâs friendâs getting married, I said Iâd go with him, thatâs all.â
Sebâs face splits open, grin rising like the sun. âFinally.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âYouâre going to a wedding with Aaron,â Seb says, speaking very slowly, like Robert is very elderly and perhaps hard of hearing. âAs his date.â
Robert shakes his head. âItâs not a date.â
It definitely hadnât sounded like a date when Aaron had asked. If Aaron was going to ask him out, if they were actually going to go there, Robert would have noticed.
âDad,â Seb says, climbing over the back of the settee because heâs an animal. âOf course itâs a date. Youâre going to wear a suit and eat food. Thatâs a date.â
âWhat would you know about it?â
Oh god. Aaronâs going to be wearing a suit.
Seb folds his arms. âYou let me watch too much TV.â
âThatâs definitely true,â Robert scrubs a hand through his hair, stomach knotting up when he thinks about Aaron, pink-cheeked and stuttering, asking him to fill a chair. âOh god. Itâs a date, isnât it?â
Sebâs face is sympathetic, which is nice, but his nod is still smugger than Robert appreciates.
âDoes he know itâs a date?â If Robert didnât notice, maybe Aaron didnât either.
âMake me one,â Seb says, nodding at the coffee cups sitting forgotten by Robertâs elbow. âAnd donât be ridiculous. Aaronâs been in love with you ever since he worked out how his personal parts worked.â
Robert goes hot all over, canât do a thing to stop it, he has to turn away to hide whatever his face is doing. âNo he hasnât. And please never say personal parts again.â
âDad,â Seb says, stepping up behind him to squeeze his shoulders. âEveryone knows you like each other. You donât have to stay single forever just for me, you know? I like Aaron, and I want you to be happy. Plus, youâre not exactly getting any younger here, are you?â
Robert resists the urge to check his reflection in side of the toaster. âThanks for that.â
âAnd Aaronâs pretty okay looking, right? And he owns his own business. You could do a lot worse.â
âPlease stop talking.â
Seb wanders back over to his books when Robert hands over his coffee, and Robertâs left at the kitchen table with nothing more than a churning belly and too many wrinkles.
Fuck. Itâs a date.
A date.
Heâs got a date with the only person whoâs ever made his breath catch and he hadnât even realised it was happening. Heâs a fucking idiot.
Heâs fucking fucked.
:::
Aaron looks good enough to sink ships. Of course he does. Itâs actually unfair how well heâs filling out that suit jacket, Robertâs fingers are already itching to touch and they havenât even made it out of the car yet.
To make matters worse, all Aaron had done is give Robert a once over when heâd opened the door, nodded, said, âYouâll do,â and turned to go before Robert could even pocket his wallet. Heâs barely said three words since.
When they pull up outside Home Farm, Robert stops him before Aaron can get out of the car. âAre you alright?â
âWhy wouldnât I be?â
Robert gives him a look, watches a woman totter past the window in uncomfortable looking heels when Aaron wont look at back him. âYou just seem a bit on edge?â
Either that or heâs regretting the whole thing.
Aaron scrubs both hands over his face, grinds the heels into his eye sockets. âSorry,â he says, sounding pained. âIâm no good at all this.â
âAll what?â
âThis,â he waves a hand between them, and at the marquee set up on the grass, brightly coloured bunting fluttering in the breeze. âWeddings and that. I donât know half these people, itâs just-â
For someone who works in customers service, Aaron is terrible with people, thatâs always been true. Itâs sort of one of Robertâs favourite things about him, that he gets to be on the inside of all that, see the marshmallowy centre.
Robert nudges him with an elbow. âWell thatâs what youâve got me for isnât it, like, a buffer or whatever,â Aaron frowns at him, like Robertâs missing the point completely, and Robert hurries to continue. âYou donât have to talk to anyone except me, if you donât want to. Pretend itâs just the two of us.â
He watches, fascinated, as Aaronâs ears turn red. âJust us,â Aaron says, nodding slowly.
Robert feels the air turn syrupy between them when Aaron doesnât look away, and heâs half a breath from doing something ridiculous, like trying to hold Aaronâs hand, when a car pulls into the space beside them, blocking out the light, and the moment drops away.
:::
The wedding is beautiful; Aaronâs friend Bella looks amazing, her fella looks at least half as good, and the ceremony is as moving as it can be, given that Robert hasnât got a clue who these people are or how they met or if theyâre even a good match. But the bloke gets properly choked up during his vows, enough that one of the bridesmaids leans over to offer a tissue, which even Robert canât pretend wasnât pretty cute.
The marquee is decked out with wild flowers and fairy lights, pops of colour everywhere. Robert and Aaron share an impressed look as theyâre herded in to find their table.
Aaron doesnât seem to know anyone at the table any more than Robert does, so they mostly keep to themselves. The soup is a bit shit and the chicken is dry but they get sticky toffee pudding for dessert and Robert doesnât drip anything down his front so he canât really complain. Plus it was free.
He watches Aaron scrape his final plate clean with his spoon, watches his lips go sticky sweet, and has to fight down that urge again, the one thatâs been popping up all day, wanting him to put his arm across the back of Aaronâs chair, lean in to drag his nose up that soft looking patch of skin behind Aaronâs ear. The one that wants to overstep the mark, just to see if Aaron will let him.
He pinches the tip of his tongue between his teeth instead and keeps his hands to himself.
They toast the bride and groom about forty times with bitter, wedding package cava, and when Robert excuses himself to head for the makeshift bar, to get them both a proper drink, heâs not exactly surprised to find Aaron at his heels.
âLet me get them,â Aaronâs saying. âYouâre only putting up with this for me.â
âOh yeah. Spending an evening with you looking like that,â Robert says, eyeing Aaron up and down. âWhat a hardship.â
Aaron rolls his eyes. âShut up.â
âI mean it,â Robert leans up beside him while Aaron orders them both a beer. âYou should wear a suit more often.â
Aaronâs tongue appears, wetting at his lips. âShut up.â
âYou know, you really need to learn how to take a compliment.â
Aaronâs eyes cut to him, and Robert keeps his gaze perfectly steady even though the intensity there is something he wants to shy away from. This is him and Aaron, thereâs no reason for his heart to be racing. âYou look good too,â Aaron says.
Robert strokes a hand down his tie, says, âOf course I do,â like he isnât preening under the attention, like he hasnât spent the last couple of years looking at Aaron just to see if Aaron will look back.
They find a corner to drink their pints, and then another, and another. By the time theyâre both loose enough in the shoulders to be laughing together, pointing out whoâs probably having an affair with who and speculating about how long the tissue bridesmaid has been round the back of the tent with the best man, Bella and whateverhisnameis are twirling around the makeshift dance floor to Toploader. Which Robert privately thinks is a bit naff, given that itâs not actually all the way dark out yet. Also itâs overcast.
âMaybe it means something to them,â Aaron says, because Aaronâs a sap at weddings, apparently.
Half the place rushes the dance floor for the second half and even Robertâs foot is tapping by the time the song ends, eases into something softer that he remembers from when he was a kid.
âCome on,â Robert says, making the decision for them. He pulls at Aaronâs arm until heâs got no choice but to join the throng of people swaying away.
Aaronâs got his hands up, protesting. âWhat are you doing? Iâm not dancing.â
And he isnât really, itâs embarrassing, so Robert takes him by the waist, dragging him in until their bellies bump and Aaron has no choice but to hang on to Robertâs arms for balance. âThere you go, thatâs better.â
Aaronâs scarlet, shaking his head. âYouâre mad, you.â
âWhen in Rome,â Robert says, has to speak right into his ear to be heard. And heâs immediately aware of how close they are. He can see the jackrabbit of Aaronâs pulse in his throat, can smell the woodsy heat of him, the inescapable musk of coffee underneath it all.
It catches Robertâs breath in his chest, both of them stilling when their eyes meet. Aaronâs gaze dips down to Robertâs mouth and then skitters away again, enough to make Robertâs lips buzz with awareness.
Itâs overwhelming, suddenly, how much he wants to press kisses to Aaronâs beer damp mouth, take his time with it, see how far down his chest that blush goes. He wants Aaron as breathless as he feels right now. Robert has never want to kiss someone more, and Aaron isnât even doing anything, heâs just frozen, staring back at Robert like he wants him to take.
Robertâs not like Aaron though, heâs not a particularly good person at all, and heâs self aware enough to know that the only thing holding him back is that heâs afraid of what might come next. Even if Aaron doesnât push him away, Robert hasnât been with someone for more than a handful of nights since he knocked Rebecca up in the toilets of her sisterâs engagement party when they were 15. Heâs never taken any one home to Seb before.
And he knows Seb approves, but that just makes it even more messy. Seb loves Aaron, just as much as Robert does. Sebâs the one who talked Aaron into buying the cafe five years ago, making a real go of it, eleven years old and mouthing off at Aaron about taking risks â God, it was hilarious.
But there are risks and then there are risks, arenât there?
Seb has been the axis around which everything has turned for half of Robertâs life. Seb is everything. If Robert messes this up itâs not just his own heart he risks breaking.
So he ducks his head, breaks eye contact to tuck his chin down into the juncture of Aaronâs neck, breathe in what could have been. He holds Aaron as close as he dares, feels the hot press of Aaronâs hands across his back, thinks Iâm sorry, I wish as hard as he can, and prays that Aaron can hear him.
:::
Robert has his coffee at home the next morning, nursing his hangover on the comfort of his own settee.
âIt went that badly then?â Seb asks, hovering.
âIt was fine,â Robert tells him.
Seb pulls a face. âJust fine? It was your first date.â
Robert feels prickly and tender about it all, still smarting from the look Aaron gave him when they went back to their drinks. Thereâs a good chance that Robert will never get to be that close to him again and he isnât sure the sense memory will be good enough to keep him going.
âIt wasnât a date,â is what he says to Seb, because he might be pretty switched on for sixteen but he doesnât need to hear all that.
Seb huffs, face screwing up again. âI donât get you. You have the chance at something really good here, with like, the perfect guy, and you canât be bothered? What happens when I go to uni? Are you just going to rattle around here all on your own until you die?â
Robertâs mouth drops open and it takes every ounce of not his dadheâs got in him not to bite back. âGo to your room.â
âWhat? You canât-â
âGo to your room,â Robert repeats, voice low and deadly. âAnd donât you ever talk to me like that again.â
Sebâs eyes go watery, like they always do when he gets told off, and he slinks upstairs with his tail between his legs.
His door slamming makes Robert flinch, even though he was bracing for it.
:::
Itâs mid afternoon before Seb shows his face again.
Robert takes one look at him and drags him in for a hug. Heâs been feeling like an arsehole for about twelve hours total now, he deserves a hug, and Seb owes him.
Seb puts up with it for a couple of minutes, and then fights his way free. âAre you ready to talk about it yet?â
Robert shrugs, goes back to his pile of blankets, still feeling sulky. âThereâs nothing to talk about.â
âYouâve been crying.â
âI have not,â so he watched this weekâs DIY SOS, sue him.
Seb sighs deeply, put upon. âDad, you know that I love you, even though youâre an actual idiot, right?â
Robert gives him a look. âYes.â
âSo I mean this in the nicest possible way, alright? Please get your head out your arse.â
âExcuse me?â
âYouâre in love with Aaron.â
âI think that might be an exaggeration,â Robert says. Itâs not, itâs totally not. He keeps thinking about Aaronâs face, so close to his, sparkling in disco colours and watching him like Robert was the only person in the room. Itâs making him feel like someoneâs scooped his heart out with a melon baller.
âAnd Aaronâs in love with you.â
âWe donât know that.â
Seb throws his hands up. âOh for Godâs sake. What the fuck is wrong with you?â
Robertâs too stunned to tell him off for swearing. âI donât want to mess everything up,â he says, sort of meekly, he has to admit.
âWho cares if you do?â Seb asks, face crumpled up and baffled, with all the bravery of someone who has never had their heart broken.
Robert braces his arms across his knees. âAaronâs very important to you,â he says. âAnd to me. Heâs one of our best friends, and heâs a really big part of this village. If I do something to ruin that, it justâŠit wouldnât be good.â
âSo that means you donât get to be happy? Either of you? Just in case? Thatâs stupid.â
Robert huffs a laugh, canât not. âBeing a grown upâs a bit like that.â
Seb comes to sit beside him, elbow digging in to Robertâs arm like always. âWell it shouldnât be.â
âWhen your mum gave you to me-â
âShe made you promise to take care of me, I know,â Seb looks up at him. âBut you have, you do. Iâm not a little kid any more, dad, look at me. This isnât about protecting me, this is about you being too scared to go after what you want. So what if it goes wrong? Aaronâs not an arsehole, he wouldnât stop being friends with us over something like that. Isnât he worth the risk?â
Robert would never tell Seb this, but he fucking hates it when the kidâs right.
:::
He manages to avoid Aaron for a couple more days, before his need for decent coffee gets the better of him and he has no choice but to stop stewing on it.
Aaronâs closing up, because Robertâs a wuss and has dragged this out for as long as he possibly can.
âWeâre closed,â Aaron says, he doesnât look up from where heâs upending chairs on to tables.
âIâll have whateverâs left in the pot,â Robert says. âIâm not fussy.â
He watches Aaronâs shoulders still. âI think we both know thatâs a lie,â Â he says, but he goes and makes Robert a proper drink anyway, because heâs Aaron.
Robert sits in his usual seat and drinks it. âSo how have you been?â he asks. âI havenât seen you for a couple of days.â
God, he sounds like a total wanker, no wonder Aaronâs looking at him like that.
âAre we really doing this?â Aaron asks.
âDoing what?â
Aaron gapes at him for a minute, then shakes his head and turns around to start wiping down the coffee machine. He doesnât say anything else but Robert can feel the frustration vibrating off him, thick enough to shake the air between them.
He watches the shift in Aaronâs shoulders, thinks about the strength of them under Robertâs hands in the middle of a crowd. Thinks about everything else, about how it was Aaron who drove Seb to the hospital when he broke his wrist last year and Robert was stuck in traffic an hour away, thinks about the way he scowls at every tourist who comes in this place, and how they all leave loving him anyway. He thinks about all the stupid, pointless flings heâs had, men and women that have never stuck and never meant a thing, thinks about the couple of boyfriends Aaron has hung on to for a while, and how it had seemed like a weight had lifted every time he was single again. He thinks about how much worse his life would be, without Aaron in it. About how heâs been falling for him for years, and how he didnât even notice it creeping up on him until it closed over his head.
He thinks about Seb, and the nice little life Robert has managed to build for them, from ashes of everything else. The life that wouldnât exist if Robert hadnât been brave enough to take it.
He did not work this hard, for all these years, to live half a life.
He follows Aaron behind the counter, gets a hand on his shoulder to turn him around.
âWhat are you doing? You canât be back-â
Robert takes Aaronâs face between his hands, drags him in until their foreheads touch. Aaron stills in his hold, eyes fluttering shut when his brain catches up to whatâs going on.
Robert gives himself a minute, to take it in, making a memory because he has a feeling heâs going to want to remember this. âYou talk too much,â he murmurs, nonsensically, before he tips their mouths together.
Thereâs an almost overwhelming feeling of finally, and then Aaronâs coming back to life in his arms, fingers creepy crawling up over Robertâs shoulders and into his hair. Robert gathers him close, makes fists in the butter soft flannel of his shirt to keep him where Robert wants him.
He tries to keep the kiss soft, as romantic as it had seemed in his head, but then Aaronâs mouth is opening under his and his tongue is in Robertâs mouth, and suddenly heâs half hard in his jeans, trying not to ride Aaronâs thigh. He gives up trying to control it and just kisses back, keeps kissing for as long as Aaron will let him, until his mouth feels sloppy with it and his chin is burning from the rough of Aaronâs beard.
Theyâre both breathless when they finally part, and Aaron looks about as shell shocked as Robert feels; like the ground has shifted under him, like he canât believe they havenât been doing that the whole time.
Aaronâs hands slide down Robertâs chest. âWhat are you doing?â he asks, and he sounds suspicious enough that Robert laughs.
He gathers his courage into a ball. Heâs a grown man, if Aaron worked up the nerve to ask him out, Robert can do this.
He keeps hold of Aaron though, so he doesnât get any ideas about moving away. âSo, I had a word with Seb, and it turns out Iâve been a bit of an idiot.â
Aaron gives him a look like, you donât say, but he doesnât say anything so Robert keeps going. âIt also turns out that Iâm sort of massively in love with you, so.â
Itâs quite cute, the way Aaronâs mouth drops open and just sort of⊠stays that way. âYou what?â
Robert looks him right in the eye. âI love you. And I have it on pretty good authority that you feel the same way?â
He doesnât mean to make it a question but it happens anyway. Aaronâs frowning, sort of kneading at Robertâs chest with his fingertips like a kitten, but heâs nodding.
âYeah?â Robert prods.
Aaron rolls his eyes. âObviously, yeah. I though you werenât interested. After wedding, when you â I thought you werenât-â
Robert cuts him off. âIâm interested. IâmâŠmore than interested.â
âSo why did youâŠâ
âI was scared,â Robert admits, grudgingly. âI think Iâve been trying to tell myself I was looking out for Seb, but thatâs not it. Iâve never felt like this before, Iâm bloody terrified.â
Aaronâs nodding. âSame here.â
âSeb reckons youâre worth the risk.â
âThat does sound like him,â Aaron says. âAlso heâs right.â
Robert strokes his hands up Aaronâs back, feels the push and pull of them breathing together. âSo, Iâm in. If youâll have me.â
Aaronâs eyes are the bluest thing Robert has ever seen. âIâll have you,â Aaron says, voice a murmur, and itâs him who leans up this time, kisses Robert until his headâs spinning. Until it feels like this could actually be his life.
Aaron fits against him like he was made to be there, and Robert lets himself imagine, for the first time, a world in which he doesnât fuck this up.
hello, again, @iwantmessedup. post two is a short fic i wrote for you about the greatest pair. hope you enjoy it!Â
Robert had been obsessing over Rebeccaâs disappearance, that much he knew. He was willing to admit that heâd been so focused on finding her, Sebâs mum, that heâd been neglecting his other responsibilities. His family. The one he knew for a fact was still alive. Aaron, his wonderful Aaron, had been so understanding throughout this whole ordeal. Aaron, one of the few constants in his life, had been put aside momentarily, and though he never voiced any complaints, Robert was just now realising how much it was affecting his future, legal, husband.
Or rather, Vic had noticed. Sheâd come over to the mill and given Robert a stern talking to when she saw Aaron eating at the pub alone, save for with Liv, for the third time this week, Robert and Seb nowhere in sight. She gave him a mouthful, and when Robert attempted to bring up a counter argument, he found himself facing the fact that he couldnât. He couldnât remember a single point in recent weeks where he focused on Aaron. Just Aaron.
So he sent Liv away to Gabbyâs, not that she needed to be forced out, she practically jumped at the opportunity to spend the night away, and Vic had offered to take care of Seb for the night. Robert feigned sickness in the morning when Aaron had woken up, and brushed him off gently when his husband demanded they both stayed home. After all, he wasnât sure when the last time Aaron so much as glanced at the scrapyard was.
As soon as Aaron stepped out for work, Robert slipped out and ran over quickly to Davidâs shop, and gathered some things for dinner. It wasnât much what Robert had planned, a quiet night in with some wine and shrimp alfredo pasta, but he knew it was just what he and Aaron needed. Heâd force Rebecca to the back of his mind tonight, and give all of his attention to his boy.
Aaron came in just as Robert put the last of the pasta noodles on the second plate.
âRobert, whatâs this? Youâre meant to be in bed all day, youâre supposed to be sick.â
âDoesnât stop you from leaning in and kissing me, does it?â
It didnât.
The kisses he shares with Aaron, theyâre amazing. Nothing compares. Nothing even comes close to the feeling he gets in his stomach when their lips touch. Heâs walking on air, or so he feels.
âAnd whatâs with the candles? Robert, are you trying to set up a mood?â Aaronâs brows are furrowed, and he breaks into a smile at his husbandâs cheeky antics.
Robert wraps his arms around Aaronâs waist and pulls him in for yet another kiss. This one is a little longer, and he tugs at Aaronâs lips with his teeth, earning him a groan and a smile. When they pull away, the look Aaron gives him, the one where his eyes are barely open and heâs staring at Robert like he means the world to him, like heâs scared to lose him, makes Robertâs heart flip. Thereâs no doubt heâs the man Robert wants to marry, and he cannot wait for the day to come.
âCare to enjoy a quiet nice in with your soon-to-be husband?â
âIâd love it Robert. But what are we going to do about Seb? Canât really get in the mood when heâs around somewhere, can I?â
âSebâs not here, Aaron, heâs with Vic-â
âAnd what about Liv? Donât want her walking in on us in the living room do we?â
âSheâs at Laurelâs with Gabby, Aaron. I love how you assume weâre going to be in some compromising situation in the living room, as if I wouldnât take you upstairs and do you in a proper bed.â
âI love how you assume weâre going to make it to a proper bed.â
Both men share a laugh together, and Robert takes Aaronâs hand in his, guiding him to the table, where he helps the younger man get into his seat.
Aaron is the first to get up when theyâre done, attempting to wash the plates and cutlery before Robert stops him, grabbing him by the arm as he tries to get past.
âHold on a minute, Aaron. Iâm a young man, who has just had a wonderful meal with the love of his life. Iâm on cloud nine right now, can we stay here for a while longer?â He pulls Aaron down to his lap and places the plates back down on the table, or so he thinks he does. Heâs not sure if the crashing noise was from the plates or the cups, but it doesnât matter as he claims Aaronâs lips in a kiss, a hand quickly running under Aaronâs shirt.
âTold you we wouldnât make it up to a proper bed,â Aaron smiles as he stands up to get a washcloth to clean up with.
âWell thatâs only because youâre so good at⊠that, I couldnât help myself. So my husband excites me, sue me!â
April, can you believe Wilson is finally happening after YEARS OF WAITING?! Is this real? Am I even alive?!
Bella Iâm crying! Every single memory had me pausing and squealing because I canât believe it! How did all of you who have watched them from the beginning wait years for this. I watched the whole thing when Will came back and that wait has been pure torture. You all deserve medals for your devotion.Â
