"Why can't you write anything happy?" Is something I was asked at eleven, when just starting to write.
My teacher loved my little tragedies but my mother and grandmother didn't see the marketability in 'downer' stories and chastised me often for them.
It is painful that they may have been right.
It is also entirely possible that my stories just aren't good enough for the places I keep submitting to... but I can't find anywhere else that takes horror stories and doesn't have a 'no' list a mile long.
So I keep trying.
And they keep rejecting me.
Would be real nice, just once, to get more than a rote rejection. A little note of 'plot was thin' or 'lost the thread midway' maybe a 'too descriptive on the gore'.
I can write what you want. Just...fucking...tell me what you want.
getting through my work shift by thinking "what would Tyler jones do" and getting through my doctor's appointments by "what would Finian de seel do"
how much do we fw the 'weird village' trope in indian settings? like no we aren't in louisiana, we are dead in the middle of purulia with no way out. tick fucking tock buddy the dust is coming.
Ava: Tell me what do you miss most? Frank: My daughter, S-A-M, playing her guitar. Being able to hear that. Ava: You don't need to. Every spring I go to the Boston Pops. Frank: Why? Ava: To watch. The feeling… the musicians… the audience… to see their joy. It's enough. Enough to see that. To share it. One missing piece doesn't make you any less whole.
