The hallway is cloyingly dark. Long, almost clichéd shadows cling to the mottled stonework, split only by the intermittent lights swinging from exposed wires every few feet. Moths bump against the bare bulbs, absently dancing to the flickering glow.

Lily takes them as proof she's headed in the right direction. Signs of life. A living, fluttering yellow brick road.

Her pulse thunders in her ears, so loud it must ring in the silence between the rustling of her jacket as she prowls.

She’d left her spare clip behind, stupidly. It means the Glock cradled in her hands is all but useless, but she’s counting on whoever’s at the end of this hallway to gloss over that. At least long enough for her to start putting fists into jugulars, to gain control of the room.

It's what Sirius would do, if he were here. He’s not; he’s ripping his hair out somewhere in a Bulgarian jail cell, next on their rescue list.

For this, she’s on her own. No backup; no voices in her ear. No good plan, really at all. Just her, and her gun without any bullets.

I know Bridgerton is dumb fluff but it's still really teeth grinding in its erasure of George's caution when it came to safeguarding his daughters before he became incapable of making arrangements. And that in itself led to them being taken advantage by older men in their households because they were the only men the girls knew. They never stood a chance.

That's more interesting and heartbreaking than the girls meekly saying they wanted to stay with their mum to be her personal punching bags. Charlotte did need her daughters, and they resented her for it and turned to less than stellar men offering them a way out. Not the other way around. George loved the girls and had seen his own family be abused and beaten. His over-protectiveness led to them being taken advantage of.
