I wish people understood Melinoë's attitude towards the fact that mortals are mortals (I mean, they can be and they will be dead). For Melinoë, the princess of the Underworld and the Godness of ghosts, dead of mortals is just a part of their existence. It's not the end. That's why she is talking about some opportunities for them to change in the Underworld (that's what happened to Sysiphus, for example). The first meeting of RMS Olympic and RMS Mauretania (Or: The beginnings of a lesbian OTP)
Didn't make it in time for the actual date of their first meeting but take this for the anniversary of Old Reliable's maiden voyage instead. ^^

June 1st, 1911, Liverpool, England: Just one day ago, RMS Olympic - the brand-new, largest ocean liner in the world - departed Belfast, Ireland, for her first-ever voyage. However, before sailing for Southampton in preparation for her maiden voyage, she makes a brief stop at Liverpool to be admired by the public. Also lying at anchor close by is the world's former largest liner and Olympic's future rival, who observes her with a scrutinizing gaze: the RMS Mauretania...
Mauretania: So, you must be White Star's new pearl, yes?
Olympic: Why, hello to you, too! You must be Cunard's lofty speed queen I've been hearing so much about.
[Mauretania vents a puff of hot air.]
M: Then you will know it's a title I earned. Though I don't expect a slug like you to be any match for me.
O: Well, you certainly have a quick temper, that's for sure.
[Mauretania vents some more hot air, along with a considerable plume of smoke coming from one of her funnels.]
M: Tsk... You White Stars... Barely off the slip, and you already cruise around like you own the place. But you'll need more than mere bravado to impress the public.
O: Oh, I don't know - judging by all the people who came to see me so far, it seems like the public is very impressed with me.
M: Of course. Humans will flock to everything that's new and shiny. However, that wears off all too quickly - all size and luxury don't matter if you can't actually perform in service.
O: Say, am I imagining things, or are you actually jealous?
M: Hardly. Who knows if I could still properly manoeuvre, with a stern as big as yours?
O: Oh, so you have been looking at my stern?
[A noise like a fan getting stuck comes from Mauretania.]
M: I merely noticed it's rather largely proportioned.
O: [She chuckles.] Alright, if you say so... But you know, I think life is about more than just blindly rushing through everything. Sometimes, it's nice to just enjoy the experience.
M: Perhaps - for those who actually have the time to indulge in such trifles. Fortunately, there are still people who care about being on time for their appointments.
O: You know, we can debate this all day, but how about we just agree to disagree and let the people decide what they prefer?
M: Hm... That's actually not a bad idea. [A brief pause.] Fine. It's on: We'll see who can attract more patrons, you or me.
O: Breezes, do you have to treat everything like a race? But fine, if you say so - I'm in.
M: Very well. I suppose I'll see you on the run, then.
O: Heh, I look forward to it.
[A brief pause.]
M: Also, one more thing: The Atlantic is not a forgiving sea, neither the waters nor the ships. Each of these ladies is vying to be the most popular, the most beloved. If you want to carve your place there, you'll have to fight for it.
O: Oh my, sounds like fun company. Anyway, thanks for the tip!
M: Hmph... Don't mention it.

This is the result of the chemical reaction that happens when you're into Maurelympic and then learn that Olympic and Mauretania basically met right at the beginning of Olympic's career.
Because yes, this is actually a thing: When Olympic stayed in Liverpool for a public inspection before her maiden voyage, Mauretania was anchored just up the Mersey. Idk if they were actually within sight of each other, but I'd assume so? Anyway, it was just too good of a writing opportunity to pass up. xD
Although Mauretania is not going to make a direct appearance in my sentient Titanic AU, she grew on me when I was doing research on her, and I quickly got down what I headcanon to be her personality: proud, ambitious, competitive. (And a bit prickly. xD Though beneath that exterior, she’s actually not a bad person.)
Meanwhile, Olympic is the very picture of confidence: feisty, charming, and enthusiastic to sail on the wide ocean. Character-wise, I imagine young Olympic similar to how Antonia from Lies of P describes herself in her youth: She loved the world, and the world loved her back. And, well, if someone talks smack to Olympic, she just counters with a good portion of humor. (Unfortunately, a lot of her cheerfulness would be gone within a year…)
Btw: Their rivalry would soon tip in Olympic’s favor, as on her first eastbound voyage, Olympic carried over 2,000 passengers, something which Mauretania had accomplished only after 3 years in service. (And I can tell you, Maury is not going to be amused when she hears this. ^^’)
Also, about Maury’s “I’ll see you on the run”: From what I found, the Olympic departed from Southampton for her maiden voyage the same day Mauretania departed from New York (on June 14th). So, given how busy sea lanes across the Atlantic were, Mauretania and Olympic might have crossed paths again soon (theoretically - I don’t know if they actually did).
Anyway, although this may be more of a “side story” to my sentient Titanic AU, you can see this little piece as sort of a preview of it. Thus, I’d love to hear your feedback on it! What did you think of the characterizations? Did the ship-specific language I went with work out alright? Is there anything in terms of historical facts that I missed/that you think I should include? Whatever it is, shoot! ^^
