Werewolf Ashton Pt.3
Part 1 Part 2
It’s been four days since Ashton met the pack, and he spent most of the nights and a good part of the mornings with them. He hadn’t allowed me to meet them yet, for reasons unknown. The only time I willingly left the motel room was in the jeep to get groceries at a small local place. I left without telling Ashton, and when I returned, he was already back from the night with the pack and wasn’t happy with me. There’d been a tension between us since I hadn’t gotten excited for him and his new pack. It seemed like both of us were just tiptoeing around it instead of confronting it like we should be. I had the choice to go back to town in three days and stick to my lie of visiting my sister, or I could stay with Ashton and never look back. I knew if I went home, I’d be faced with multiple questions from the hunters, but if I didn’t go back in the next few days, I could never return again. Given that things didn’t work for Ashton and I in the end, where would I go? These were things I knew we had to talk about, but I just couldn’t summon the courage to bring them up with Ashton. No doubt he would get upset and a shift would be inevitable, then it would limit the already limited time I had with him. Somewhere deep inside me, no matter how badly I wanted to deny it, knew I’d be going back to town. I knew it was coming before he even sat me down the day before I was supposed to return. “[Y/N], we’ve got to talk.” “Clearly.” I tried not to snap, but I was constantly on edge now “Don’t make this harder than it has to be.” “I’m not.” He sighed, he knew this approach probably wouldn’t get anywhere with me “Listen, I want you to go back tomorrow.” “I know you do.” “But you’re not going to go, are you?” “I am.” “Really?” He raised an eyebrow at me “I didn’t see that coming.” “What other choice do I have, honestly?” “What do you mean?” “I can’t stay with you. You made it clear you don’t want me around anymore, I might as well pick up where I left off before I met you. Before I figured out about werewolf’s or the dangers of hunters and other humans finding out. I’ll just go back to normal.” “You know that’s not true.” “Isn’t it though? That’s exactly what you want, and I’ll let you have that because I care about you more than you care about me.” I picked up the rest of my pride and left the motel room with my bag. A part of me silently wished Ashton would have followed me out, another part was glad he didn’t. I drove back to town a day early anyway. I could easily cover up the reason for me not staying the full week. The only thing I wasn’t sure I could cover up was Ashton’s sudden disappearance. ** Today marked a month and a half since I returned. The hunter’s activity had died down quickly after they realized they didn’t have a werewolf in their territory anymore. No one bothered me with any questions about him anymore. They figured he left me the exact way he left the town. We were all forgotten and behind him. I tried to pretend that it didn’t hurt, and as good as I was at lying to others, I was shitty at lying to myself. I did things to keep me busy, like staying extra hours at work, and getting involved into the community. Which lead me to where I was in this exact moment, standing in the forest close to Ashton’s old house. Earlier this morning, a search for a little girl who went missing yesterday evening started. I had the day off work, so I volunteered myself to participate. It was now dusk and the light in the forest was disappearing. I stupidly allowed myself to get separated from my group and the flashlights, and with the rapidly dying light source, I would find myself lost in the forest for the night. I felt the chill begin to set in my bones and my senses went into high alert. I stood still by a fallen tree as my eyes adjusted to the darkness. I stayed silent, listening for footsteps or voices. I heard nothing but my own breathing. Had everyone else called it quits for the night? Had they found the girl and I missed the notification because of my lack of communication devices? Would anyone notice me missing? I was shaken from my thoughts at the sound of a twig snapping beneath feet. No footsteps that I could hear followed, and I crouched lower to my tree. I held my breath as the first sign of a figure emerged from the trees in front of me. It was too low to the ground to be human, but it took the shape of an animal that I knew all to well. But as it got closer, I knew it wasn’t who I thought it could be. It’s fur was a sandy colour instead of the oily black, its eyes glowing green and not golden. This wolf wasn’t friendly looking either, its fangs were barred and covered in the blood of its last prey. To the looks of it, I was its next one. It was too late to run, not that I could out run the wolf anyway. I wasn’t in close enough proximity to scale a tree. I was stuck. The last thing I could think of before the wolf lunged was to push myself into the tree. The next thing I knew, the matted fur of the wolf was shoved into my face, suffocating me and my shoulder was sent into a blaze. In the next second, the wolf was gone, but didn’t take the pain with him. I spent the rest of the night on the mossy forest floor, withering in misery and experiencing change after change, my bones shifting in agony from human to beast and back again. I had become the new wolf in town.
