This marks the second time a nuclear submarine has fired a torpedo in anger, the second surface warship sunk by a nuclear submarine during an active conflict, and the fourth surface warship sunk by a submarine since World War 2.

New Delhi: Sri Lanka will treat Iranian sailors rescued from a torpedoed frigate according to international law, a minister said Saturday, following reports Washington was pressuring Colombo to not repatriate them.

India certainly cannot control wht happens in international water. In an active war situation, they are a legitimate target. If they were unconscious of it, it's their faults, not india's.

Stava tornando da un'esercitazione ed ha scelto il momento sbagliato, non c'è guerra dichiarata ma ormai questo non conta, probabilmente i marinai erano schierati sul ponte, non certo preparati a colpire o ad essere colpiti.
Era a 4000 km da casa ma non poteva pavidamente rifugiarsi in un porto vicino, e quindi si lancia in mare aperto verso la flotta più potente del mondo.

Del resto gli inglesi hanno chiesto conferma, prima di affondare il Belgrano che stava manovrando vicino all'area di interdizione (di 370 km).
Qui invece la barchetta era ancora a 4000 km dalla zona di guerra e "pensava di essere al sicuro in acque internazionali", ma meritava la fine.

Ein US-Boot im Kampfeinsatz vor Sri Lanka - ein Schock auch für den großen Nachbarn Indien. "Vergessen Sie, was in der Straße von Hormus geschieht", so Starmoderator Arnab Goswami vor einem Millionenpublikum im Nachrichtensender Republic TV, "der Krieg ist direkt hier und ganz nah bei uns."
Der ehemalige Chef des Marinestabes, Admiral Arun Prakash, zeigte sich im TV-Sender India Today empört: "Das ist quasi vor Indiens Haustür passiert, 40 Meilen vor der Küste Sri Lankas. Und die Tatsache, dass dieses Kriegsschiff von einem Torpedo versenkt wurde, bedeutet, dass ein Atom-U-Boot der US-Marine seit vielen Tagen in diesen Gewässern lauert."
Noch sind es in Indien vor allem Journalisten und ehemalige Militärs, die die Versenkung der iranischen Fregatte kommentieren. Doch viele gehen davon aus, dass sich auch die indische Regierung bald dazu äußern muss - obwohl sie seit Kriegsausbruch bislang extrem zurückhaltend war. Denn der Untergang der "IRIS Dena" hat viel mit Indien zu tun - über die Tatsache hinaus, dass er nur 300 Kilometer entfernt vom südlichsten Punkt des Subkontinents stattfand.
Vor gerade mal zwei Wochen waren die Matrosen der "IRIS Dena" begleitet von einer kleinen Militärkapelle des Schiffes noch auf der Uferpromenade der ostindischen Stadt Visakhapatnam marschiert - bei einer Parade anlässlich der von Indiens Marine durchgeführten internationalen Flottenschau IFR 2026 und eines gleichzeitig durchgeführten Seemanövers.
Die "IRIS Dena", eine im Iran selbst gebaute leichte Fregatte, die 2021 vom Stapel lief, wurde bei dieser Gelegenheit auch der indischen Präsidentin vorgeführt. An dieser Flottenschau hatten 70 Staaten teilgenommen: Nicht nur der Iran und Russland, sondern auch Einheiten aus westlichen Ländern wie den USA und Deutschland.

Teilgenommen an dem gemeinsamen Seemanöver mit Indien haben aber die Iraner - mit ihrer Fregatte "IRIS Dena". "Und nur wenige Tage nach ihrer Abreise aus Visakhapatnam, wo sie unser Gast war, wurde sie von der US-Marine torpediert und versenkt", so Ex-Admiral Arun Prakash. Er sei tief besorgt, so Indiens ehemaliger Marinestabschef, dass die Amerikaner "den Seekrieg bis vor unsere Haustür getragen haben."
