Dass Indien einmal von einer muslimischen Dynastie mit mongolischen Wurzeln regiert wurde, den Moguln. Ihr Gründer, Babur, stammte aus dem heutigen Usbekistan. Das Mogulreich entstand 1526 und umfasste in seiner Blütezeit fast den gesamten indischen Subkontinent sowie Teile des heutigen Afghanistans. Auch das Taj Mahal wurde unter den Moguln gebaut, als Mausoleum für die Frau eines Großmoguls.
Ab dem späten 17. Jahrhundert zerfiel das Reich, durch Erbkonflikte und Rebellionen, und wurde im 18.-19. Jahrhundert von den Briten übernommen.
