that's so cool that you climbed on that! can you go to the top??
You can!
Oops, submitted too soon. You can, and it’s a little nerve-wracking, but definitely worth it! The last 20-30 minutes of the hike are an all-fours kind of affair, with chains bolted into the rock for handholds. My roommate from this summer recommended it when I said I wanted to go to Zion, “but only if you’re okay with heights.” I asked if the trail was exposed or narrow, and she considered before solemnly saying “High-consequence falls.”
🌟 for chirraek
When your OC loses all hope, who do they turn to first? What helps make them feel better? What calms them down and reassures them? Why?
the hive, as a rule, do not and cannot turn to each other for comfort or reassurance. that hews too close to showing weakness, and among the ascendant it would invite an attack, well-deserved. how well they follow this rule depends, but chirraek keeps nearly all at a distance, and has no siblings or hive they grew with that they would risk it with
they take comfort, in a distant sort of way, in savathun’s cunning, and in their own value to her court. as long there is a need for them, they have a place, and that is enough
chirraek likes to bury themselves in layers of lists and monotonous details. it constrains their thoughts and feelings, it’s something they’re legitimately good at, and it helps them feel more prepared for what might be coming. if that isn’t enough, they’ll check on all their chains of tithes, which is a painstaking and time-consuming process that reminds them of what they’re responsible for, and who supports them - even if only because they must
"I only dream of infinite buildings" is extremely cool of you to say and while idk it may be unpleasant in real life I just wanted you to know that I find it staggeringly cool
i think this is the first time i’ve had the words “staggeringly cool” applied to me and i’m delighted it’s because of my brain’s weird dream creations
An ask: Have you read Hexarchate Stories? What was your favorite part?
I have! My favourite part is described in this post. But to add some other things:
I enjoyed the pre-he*archate story, the Chameleon’s Gloves. It was great to see a view of the Kel prior to their being a faction of a broader empire and I would love to see similar views of any of the others that existed prior to the empire.
The story from Rodao’s POV was devastating but also very well done.
It’s great having all these stories gathered together in a print edition.
Thanks for the ask!

[Eris/Toland] The claws ripped through reality at the same time the space between them disappeared.
He'd forgotten the necessity of breath so many eons ago that the sudden press of negative matter against his lungs was an afterthought. She'd folded however, choking against the heaviness of something and everything and nothing. Was this betrayal or another step in their never-ending dance? He'd chosen her as his partner long before his triumph before Crota's throne, and Toland wouldn't change that choice even as she wept before him, an echo of her real and true shape. Salvation, he had heard but the ferocious maw that once was his heart devoured itself as the wish dragon's arm reared back to tear their reality again.

TRULY
Ooh what are you doing for nano?
Thank you for asking! :D
Okay so, *unfurls five-foot-long list of notes* the gist is that the Elves have lived in a timeless paradise for millennia, where nothing can grow or change. The only problem is that this poses a problem for having kids, because unless you want them to be babies forever you can’t raise them in their world (which I have tentatively termed the Elfgarden) - you have to send them to ours, swapping them out for a human child, which is where changelings come from.
The plot is one of the changelings has reached the age of adulthood and has been called back to the Elfgarden. With only vague memories of her life in our world and a desire to find her cat (whatever that is), she has to navigate meeting her true mother and her human counterpart, the aggrieved Unseelie, an alchemist constantly pushing the limits of, um, “science”, and a world that doesn’t want her to ever leave. And, hopefully, help her human counterpart escape Fae slavery.
It’s basically Alice in Wonderland inspired, mixed with everything I loved about the Black Garden from the Forsaken Prince book and with a dash of “Thanks, Tolkien, but where are the *weird* Elves?” I actually attempted this for Nano in 2017, and only got to 10,000 words - I’m hoping to, well, finish the challenge of course, but at least make it to 20,000 this time! The story has changed a lot since 2017, and so have my skills as a writer, so I’m excited to see where this one goes.
