Internet safety PSA:
If anyone is dealing with pesky anon hate, I recommend getting a stat counter. It helps pin down the IP in case it’s someone you know. Blocking anon through tumblr is sometimes effective enough, but people can get around that in several ways.
Some caveats to using stat counter:
- doesn’t work if they visit your page using iOS mobile safari (idk about mobile chrome)
- won’t work for people who just happen to scroll past you on their dashboard or in a community or message
- only works if someone is logged in to an account when they go to your page (but you have to be logged in to send asks anyway)
- doesn’t work if they go to your page on a web browser (logged in or not, doesn’t matter, it won’t track that visit; I just tested this on myself), so someone visiting your url in this format (https://www.yourblog.tumblr.com) like the way it is in a browser won’t show up
- which means it often misses bot visits, since those use browsers most of the time
- it won’t track visitor activity on someone else’s blog
- it won’t tell you names or account names, you’ll have to be a little bit of a detective
- it only records page visits after 5 mins of viewing, so even though you may see a page visit, you won’t always be able to watch a playback of what they clicked on or did
- someone says it won’t track anyone with an IP located in or a VPN set to Denmark or Holland/netherlands probably privacy reasons idk, just don’t make enemies in those countries
Hope this helps everyone stay safe and avoid hate!
