Mercury Rising
The results released in the latest Fabricator & Installer Market Report by Insight Data made for positive reading; not least for Spectus Window Systems Vertical Slider fabricator, Mercury Glazing Supplies Ltd (Mercury).
The report named the vertical sliding sash window the stand-out PVC-U product of 2014, ââŚwith 7,495 installers now actively offering this product, an increase of 600 firms compared to 2013.â
From 10,000sqft in Gloucester Mercury has been manufacturing this increasingly popular window since 2002. Today, the vertical slider equates for around 40% of the business.
Commenting on the latest figures, Steve Cross, director of Mercury Glazing Supplies Ltd said: âIt confirms what we have long believed, that consumers are becoming more discerning when it comes to their choice of window. The general public is seeing the true enhancement that PVC-U vertical sliders deliver to their property, and are appreciating the benefits over traditional timber.â
Mirroring the results of the report Mercury has steadily increased its vertical slider order book over the past 13 years. In 2014, turnover was up 15% on the previous year and with their year-end due at the end of July they are on target to once again achieve 15% growth in 2015.
âThe most noticeable shift in the past couple of years is the number of new business enquiries we receive from installers who have been purchasing cheaper, lower quality competitor products. So itâs not just about the increase in VS installers itâs about the rise of a better standard of product. As homeowners are becoming more familiar with a PVC-U vertical sliding sash window levels of expectation and demand are rising. Many installers have turned to us because theyâre finding that their current supplier just canât offer the back-up when things go wrong.â
The Fabricator & Installer Market Report also highlighted the continued rise of the trade counter, an area that Steve and the team are very familiar with. âWeâve worked closely with a number of trade counters for many years.  We recognise the value but more importantly, the nuances of supplying an over-the-counter product; we fully understand the need for a competitive product, reliable service and expert technical back up for people at the sharp end!â said Steve.

New Insight Window Industry Report Is A âMust Readâ, Says Industry Experts
Insight Data has published its annual Window Industry Report, now established as the âmust-readâ barometer for the UK window, door and conservatory industry.
The Report is the result of 6 months research with 15,000 fabricators and installers, outlining trends, new developments, industry changes and threats to the industry.
Insight Dataâs Commercial Director, Helen Costeloe-Hughes comments;
âThe industry is going through another transition. Trade Counters are disrupting the natural supply chain, opening up the market to 22,000 builders who are actively challenging existing installers. Elsewhere there have been a number of surprises, especially with aluminium, conservatories and composite doors.â
The Market Report points to changes across the entire industry, with detailed information on regional variations, installers, fabricators and products.
It also includes the Insight Top 30 â the UKâs top performing PVC-U fabricators by turnover and the top 30 by Net Worth.
âWeâve seen some big changes in the Top 30, and some really exciting developments in terms of overall industry growth. The Report makes fascinating readingâ adds Helen.
Key facts from the Report include;
Number of PVC-U fabricators declined for another year
Aluminium now a serious challenger to PVC-U
Installers under threat from a new breed of âBuilder Installersâ
Rise of the âconservatory replacementâ market
Battle of the giants among the industryâs biggest companies
The comprehensive 13 page report is published by Insight Data as a free service for the industry and is available online at www.insightdata.co.uk
