You have the right to remain silent…
Why do we have to be reminded of that?
I like to think it’s because we’re so focused on “Freedom of speech” we don’t realize how important silence is.
And I think instead of being focused on the freedom to speak we should start exercising our freedom to think.
Thinking seems so foreign that when we encounter thinkers we automatically deem them as intellectuals.
Why is silence so uncomfortable for many people?
I often sit in silence and think to myself about any and everything.
Sometimes my mind is going so fast I can’t even remember the last thought I had because new ones come rushing in so fast.
But I always get asked “is anything wrong?” or “why are you so quiet?” or “whats on your mind?”
Why is silence viewed so negatively?
And why is it that when I tell someone I’m thinking they take it as though something is weighing heavy on my mind?
But I do find myself doing it sometimes too because I’ve been conditioned that when others are silent or “thinking” it’s usually because of something negative.
Sometimes I feel like I need to clear my mind. Not necessarily because of anything bad but just because it’s cluttered. I get overwhelmed.
I dislike being asked what I’m thinking about when I’m zoning out because I honestly can’t even put it into words. I’m just letting my mind wonder.
So i basically said all of that to say this: Silence isn’t bad. It’s great. In fact when you’re hanging out and no one has anything to say just let it be.
Just sit in silence and just be.
No more forced conversations.
No more awkward silences.
The silence isn’t awkward. You are.
Freedom of Speech is just a catchy little line they came up with to keep your mind preoccupied and your ego busy.
They’re just sounds we agreed on to represent something.
They’re not that important.
Perhaps getting this thought across would have been more poetic if I had just made it a blank blog post…
