because compassion can drown you in someone Else's pain and you must be strong to stay afloat.

because compassion is unfettered and will not be metered.  It is overwhelming and unconstrained, you must be strong to stay with it to let it flow with you almost like the flow of an electric current. 

it makes you catch your breath as though you'd had the wind knocked out of you and you must be strong enough to wait for your breath to return. compassion will break you in half and you must be strong enough to let it.   but there is no shame either in weakness.  people are weak because they are recovering from something. they are trying to heal from something.  maybe they are healing from all the compassion that broke them. once they heal they will be stronger, strong enough to be compassionate again.
